Simple thoughts on Basic Truths![]() The state has issued a mosquito warning. It's a heat wave. The smell of pigs this year is more pungent than last year. Flies are everywhere. Keeping the gardens watered. Travel plans. The never-ending to-do list. I'm having a hard time enjoying summer right now, and it's my own fault. Summer is great, it's a billion times better than winter (which I cannot tolerate at all). Have you ever read to your children the book "The Penguin That Hated the Cold"? Most of my months are spent longing for the time of year when I can run around in flip flops, walk in the front door without having to find a place to hang a coat or jacket, and basically, live like a normal person who is not in a perpetual state of hypothermia since anything below seventy-five degrees feels like frost bite to me. Yes, I was made for summer. Summer looks like "truth." Things are more laid bare (and no, I'm not going to make jokes about what people wear in the summer). The ground isn't covered by snow and ice, but invitingly green and open, just like seed pods that that no longer shelter their fruit. Everything has opened up, shed its cold weather protection, and is essentially more authentic, more to the core. There is also a simplicity to summer that one can sense more than in other seasons. Breakfast isn't fussy, a bowl of berries or piece of fruit is a fast treat. There are no gloves and scarves to keep track of, no winter storms to worry about, no army of snow boots by the door. Run out of an ingredient for supper? Go see what's in the garden. People are more likely to be found outside their homes, meeting, talking, interacting. Summer brings a community together in ways that people otherwise would not on their own. Could it be that simplicity lies within that which is true? Lead me in thy truth, and teach me; for though art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day. (Psalms 25:5) It seems like an ideal time of year to start a quest for that which is true in our lives and beliefs, and by extension, that which is simple. I am heartened and inspired by many of the things people are doing these days that bring people closer to the authentic source of things. Sometimes this means going back to a everything-old-is-new-again mentality, and sometimes it means stepping out of our comfort zones and being open to something entirely new, but just as genuine. With the Lord's guidance, I plan on doing more of both in the next few months. Leave a Comment { Last Page } { Page 14 of 108 } { Next Page } |
