A Mom's Musings

• Friday, September 21, 2007 - Forced into simplicity!

That's an ominous title, but tonight my microwave died....!  At first I was borderline panic.  Now, I'm more like, "Kewl!"  I'm heating hot fudge on the stove top!  Yes!...you can do that!  And it works!!  Wow!!!  We have a small micro that we keep in the camper that I was thinking I'd retrieve tomorrow, but now I'm thinking maybe we'll do without for a bit, see how we fare.  My in-laws haven't used one in at least a couple of years (MIL is certain it's the cause of all manner of ill-effects on the body.  Who knows she may be right).  Is it really so bad to slow down and do things the old-fashioned way?!  Yet if I was truly old-fashioned, my cook stove would be fueld by wood!

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some HOT hot fugde ready to be poured on our ice cream!

how you fare without it. We've been without one for about 4 years and don't even think about using one anymore, we purposely disposed of it on our path to simplicity. I'm always interested to see how others fare without it.

I think my biggest challenge will be having my coffee in a normal sized mug and not some of the oversized ones I have! That way I can drink it when it's warm or add a bit to it to top it off and warm it up. Other than re-heating the odd leftover now and then, we really use it most to re-heat cold coffee!!

Mine went out in April right before we had company on the weekend. I figured no way was I going to get another one til at least Monday. Well, my hubby was more lost without it than I. Sat. when company went back to motel. Guess what? Hubby had to go to Wal-Mart and get new Microwave. He couldn't go another day without it. I was set on waiting til Monday. Oh, well.

I love this post!!! Really, so many of the things we think are necessities, are just conveniences, aren't they? We really can live without alot of what we think we need. I think that's why I like going camping so much. For the most part, we stay at campgrounds that don't have electric hookups, and we don't have a generator. So, there's no lights other than a lantern and a flashlight, no TV, no microwave, no computer. And I love it. But would I love it if I had to live like that all the time? I doubt it.

A microwave, though, I could live without permanently. I only use it to heat up tea that I've let sit too long. We stopped using ours for cooking many years ago, because (like your mother-in-law) we think they are harmful.

We don't have one either. Ours blew up almost 2 years ago and we decided not to buy another one. At that time my ILs were living with us and FIL just couldn't deal, so he bought us one. We never used it, only he did.

But when we moved up here we sold it in a yard sale. We haven't bought one. People think we are nuts. But we do just fine without it and don't have room for it anyway.

That was a cute post to read. We still have our microwave, but I have read bad things about them. All I use it for now is to heat up my cold coffee. Hope you enjoyed your hot fudge sauce that you heated on the stove! Holly

Does that mean that I'm old-fashioned?
I love my wood cook-stove.

LOL,
