Over the last week I managed to till the plot, rake in my own compost, put up the new fence, and on Sunday I planted!! I am doing bush string beans, tomatoes, pickling cucumbers and leaf lettuce. I can't wait to make my own pickles!! How fun. I really missed doing this last year, and as soon as it was decided recently that we're not moving this year after all, I started making plans! I'm hoping the little resident Phoebe helps me out again. Two years ago he/she would sit on my fence and then flit down and pick out some nice tasty little bugs.
I'm very content to be planning to stay here for another year. We have been talking about finally getting our woodstove hooked up this summer/early fall, too. We have the stove in place but need the pipe which DH got a quote of at $800! Hmm.... But it would be so nice to have that heat source, too. I'm sick and tired of throwing so much money at the propane comany!! Wood sources in NH are everywhere. Local and renewable. I like that.
If we had a better idea of our year-from-now plans, I'd also be on the hunt for a couple of sheep. I just mowed the grass and had to do the orchard - ugh. We've got six apple trees out behind the garage; I love the trees but hate having to mow out there!! The ground is sloped and very uneven. Better suited to some grazing animals! Hubby has a contact from work if I ever decide to take the plunge, but setting up shelter for them is another matter altogether that I don't think I'm prepared to handle yet. We don't have any sort of barn or shed, just the garage.
Farmer's Market will be starting up before I know it so I'd better decide if I'm going to take part again this year. I wasn't initially (moving and all that) but now I'm reconsidering. I just have to decide if I want to dedicate every Friday this summer to baking again...it gets tiring! Everyone else there either sells produce or hand-crafted items that they can just stock-pile. Baked goods must be fresh so that means I bake ALL day on Friday if I do this. |
