After reading one comment in particular, I thought I'd provide a bit of an explanation as to why we seem to be looking to move on from our current situation. I don't think the Alaska thing will happen (I loved the one comment on having a "3 day rule!"...it works!!) - we had a wonderful time there that summer but both DH and I admit we couldn't handle the winters. Too cold and, more importantly, too dark (Anchorage right now has sunlight from roughly 9:45am to 3:15pm....!).
Living out of the van and camper was only ever meant to be temporary!!...just until we got there and got settled. It's not a long-term lifestyle! Yikes, I can't even imagine. However, we will be moving and leaving this house, one way or another. Legally it belongs to my father, and there are many combinations of factors in why we can't stay here much longer.
On top of that is the decision that my hubby has made to get out of his current job (again, many many reasons behind that) and pursue his dream of doing construction/maintenance at a Christian camp. We've given it lots of prayer and soul-searching and agree this move will benefit our whole family.
But you know what? I don't think there's anything wrong with following a dream! Lots of people do just that in order to be able to homestead. Sometimes it's in our own "backyard," so to speak, and sometimes it's further afield. My dream is to have a united family, working and learning together in our homesteading and homeschooling.
I think it's a good dream! |

We just sold everything we own and moved to Alaska. (2 months ago yesterday!) We adore it here. We are currently staying with family in Eagle River but working in Anchorage. We will be moving to Anchorage as early as today, perhaps. (waiting to hear back about an apartment)
So far this winter isn't too bad. We had the coldest November in 16 years, and the longest cold snap in history. We don't know any different, so it didn't phase us. Those who have been here for years were whining a lot more than we were. Since we don't know what a "normal" November is like, we didn't have anything to compare it to.
The darkness was a little disconcerting at first, but now I barely notice it. And besides, we are nearly to the solstice, so it will be reversing soon. I too, had never been here except in the summer. And I have to say, I still love it. :)
Anyway, if this is your dream, I say pray pray pray and if God makes the way, the go for it.
I had a man tell me at work last week "15 minutes in Alaska is better than a week anywhere else" and I'm inclined to agree with him. Darkness and all. ;)
