I found the link to Homesteadblogger through my winter issue of The Old Schoolhouse magazine. I'm finally getting to it now! Better late than never...
We are really still wannabe homesteaders. We live on an acre in rural NH, but there are really too many houses around us to make keeping livestock feasible. I had thought of keeping some chickens and I'd love to have a couple of sheep (I hate mowing in and around the trees in the "orchard!"), but decided to keep that dream for our next place. My hubby would love to be off the grid. Not a hard thing to get interested in here with our outrageous electric rates!! Ugh. Oh well, hopefully that will happen with our next place, too.
My real passion is horses. I'd have a pasture full of them if I had my druthers. I consider myself "between horses" right now as I'm busy raising my three wonderful boys. I do have a chance to ride fairly often, though, so at least I can get my fix!
I do manage to keep a small garden here at our place (no odor from that so nobody can complain!....). Didn't plant one this year due to upcoming events but I've always enjoyed doing bush beans, cucumbers and tomatoes. We've done pumpkins for the kids, and the one year I tried corn it was far too dry anyway, so that failied miserably. I did end up with some nice stalks for decorating in the fall.
I've got a new supper in the oven tonight. It's called Chili Pie with cornbread crust. I'm hoping my picky eaters will take to it, since they like most Mexican dishes. This comes close! My youngest - age 4 - came and asked me what was for dinner. I told him, "Chili Pie. I've never made it before." He turned to go with a quizzical look on his face, and said to himself in near disbelief "Cold pie??" Gotta love the simplicity of a child! I tried something new in preparing this dish, too - made the stove part in my cast-iron skillet, then popped the whole thing into the oven for the baking part! Don't know why I hadn't though of that before. Reminds me of a video we have on some folks who live waaay out in the Bush in Alaska, of the woman who makes ALL manner of dishes with moose meat. She's got all cast iron cookware. Works well on a wood stove! Had moose once and boy was it GOOD. Nice cut of meat.
Well I'd best finish preparing dinner. Maybe I'll post my Chili ("Cold") Pie recipe a little later!
