but I typed this up for a board I post on and just wanted to share. My dad is 15-20 younger than his sibs were and they (2 sisters and a brother) fought like cats and dogs! ANd 2 of them were pretty close to scraping hte bottom on the barrel (my aunt was married 13 times and my uncle 'retired' from the police dept before he got canned and was 'released' from the armed forces before the ugliness hit hte fan and a few of my dad's friends in school were rumored to be fathered by his uncle). My dad BENT OVER BACKWARDS for these ppl! I always thought it was sort of doormatish, but then I asked him WHY and he said, cuz he's my brother (I also learned i needed to decode 'man talk'!LOL). My mom often grumbled about it and I didn't get why she was nice too. But now, as an adult (in theory), I totally get it. My dad wasn't being a doormat. He was doing what he knew how to do. He HATED taht they all fought. He even managed to make sure there were all on speaking terms before they died (he still has one living sister)! It was THAT important to him! That taught me more about him than anything else probably! He's got sooooooooo many good qualities (and a few glaringly horrible ones!LOL)--he's a hard worker, can fix or make anything you want (except a computer!LOL), will help you w/anything, makes sure that a local man in town has a running mode of transporation (that's a long story--he doesn't drive a vehicle), etc, etc. But the one thing that stands out is that my dad LOVED his family. He didnt' turn his back on them. he didn't condone what they did either. He tried to help them the best he knew how. I believe we are to be in this world to serve and love. And that is probably one of the best immediate examples that i know of. In addition to that, I didn't even think of it until today, my mom probably did what she did cuz she loved and cared so much for my dad and knew how important this was for him. She really really really did not like my dad's mom (step, but another long story!LOL But his mom died when he was 12 and his dad quickly (hastily?) remarried) . Yet when my gma fell and broke her hip and had nowhere to go, she moved into our house for 6 weeks (or whatever). She had a bell she'd ring whenever she wanted my mom. Not really sure if I'd have the self restraint to not put that bell where I'd think she wanted to!LOL That bell drove my mom crazy and it was not HER idea to use a bell. But again, she did it cuz of how she felt about my dad, not her MIL.
