help designing a jewelry box top! PLEASE!

I have been upset about my jewelry box. My other one was stolen by the burglars last August. Our neighbor is a carpenter and when I first met him he had this GORGEOUS purple wood (purple heart from South America) that I fell in love w/but I couldn't figure out what to have made w/it. The burglars resolved that crisis for me. I've seen this guy's work and it's just BEAUTIFUL! He obviously pours his heart and soul into what he does. So I met w/him last fall and we talked about what and he said it would be January before he got to it. Fine. At the end of January I stopped in and asked what was up. Oh he'd call me next week. So this past week, I decided taht when his open sign was hanging out, I was goign to stop in and find out what was going on. If he didn't have time, fine, but I need SOMETHING since I'm using this teeny tiny plastic canvas box and I cna't find squat in it!LOL Also I don't know how long I have to file the follow up claim (what's he's making is more than what ins depreciated my old box at so I have to submit his bill to collect the difference--about $70) and don't want to loose that money!

So I see his open sign up on the way home from the coop and stop in. I wasn't really sure what to expect, but he tries to find something and as it turns out, he's been splicing (I don't know woodworking terms!LOL) pieces of the white maple and purple wood together and going over different joints and created a design (it's all flush--I don't know what it's called!) adn its' very obvious he's spent alot of time on this! He's even ordered the hinges and drawer knobs! He's drawn up the essential lay out of it as well. I was like WOW! So now the pressure is on ME! He's out of town next week, but I need to have the top design ready to submit to him. However we are doing something a little different. The top will have an 'tray' in it nad I want the decorative design in that. I thought about a monogram type thing, but I don't know if that's what I want. I want this to be an heirloom piece (for who I don't know--my favorite DIL????????) and I thought of the 'fish' sign, but I don't think I'd like that. So I need to get moving on that..............he's pretty much designing the rest and once he gets it basically done, we work on how I want the drawers sectioned off.

Sounds absolutely beautiful! Will this design on the top be carved? What about flowers? They are timeless. Or hey, how about a computer, since that is so 21st century...that will make it an interesting heirloom, ROFL!!!

The design will be on the top as the bottom of the 'tray'. I dont' know what else to call it. IOW, there will be a large lip/rim around the outside of the lide and 1/4-1/2" recessed part to form the tray. THIS really appealed to me cuz I wear the same watch, wedding rings nad other ring and sunglasses EVERYWHERE I go and they come off the second i am home. This would be a very convenient place for me to put them.

Hummingbird? Butterfly? Another type bird? Or, flowers, like already mentioned. Roses are very popular!

How neat to 'have' to figure out something for your own box!!! WOW. Pictures, when it's done.

Keep them coming! I don't know that I am a bird person. And I am horribly picky about colors and designs (Which is whY this is SOOOOO hard for me!). The only flower that I think I could deal seeing in that type of settgin is an Iris (I think a lilac would be too hard). I've seen a flower piece he did in all browns and it was OK. It needed color!LOL I'll definitley post pics when it's done. He said I'm now his 'main project'. YIKES!
