service scams

Oh let the fun begin. Did I post here that we finally got our landline working after 3 weeks of not having it? It's almost always an inside problem (we have cruddy phones!LOL) and we'd tried everything and finally put in a call to horseman (he retired yesterday!) and he found that it was actually an OUTSIDE problem! Fixed it in 5 min!

Our dish has been out for 3weeks. WE've had this happen before. Our LNB (I don't know what that is so don't ask) is bad. It's a piece on the dish adn DH has bought and replaced them before--no big deal. He has gone thru the list of dealers listed on DIRECTV'S website and they have all stopped carrying parts!!!!!! Not to mention out dish is a 1996 model and they have since changed dishes (and therefore parts, including the LNBs). So DH asked me to call DTV itself and find out where we can buy one. AFter getting transferred 50 times and winding up in technical support, I essentially figure out that they don't sell parts anymore so we get to choose between a $70 one time call that covers ALL parts and labor OR a $14.99 call that you have to sign up for 1 yr protection service for $5.99/mo. The man obviously did not know who he was talking too!LOL I told him that my DH won't want to pay for a service call when he can fix it himself if we can just find someone to sell us the part!!!!! And the man did concede that DH knew something when he asked if DH had checked the cable lines into the Dish. I said that I oculdn't 100% positively say yes, but that I would surmise given that he was tearing the dish itself apart, that he'd done that step first (DH is an incredibly thorough man) along w/making sure the dish was on, etc, etc. He sheepishly aggreed that it was more than likely.......

At any rate, I flat out asked Gordon (who could tell I was seeing thru this thin veil of a racket for DirecTV to scam ppl w/service calls) that if he does give me this 800 number (where they call to place service calls) and they won't give me the LOCAL number of service providers that praytell, how does one go about getting service OTHER THAN THRU DIRECTV!!!!!! I told him that I needed to discuss this w/DH adn was there a number to get directly to his dept or did I have to go thru all the fun of explaining, waiting and transferring all over again....... So I got a number and PIN that will work for 5 days. Really? Things are so bad in that dept that you only take calls for 5 days?ROTFL!!!!!!!!

Any my BIL checks abadoned homes (contracted by the govt) and is allowed to take anything of interest to him. So Dh is going to see if he ever sees dishes like ours and see if we can't get the part that way.
