![]() About my Mat....VBS is officially over! The refreshment table last night went great. We had 5 ppl so things were under control adn went very smoothly. I was able to speak to Mat's teacher. I had touched base w/her all week long and she said things were going well. She had 9 kids and 1 adult helper so she got to know the kids fairly well. Last night after I thanked her and told her how much Mat loved VBS this year, she told me that it was very obvious that Mat's a very bright child and asked me if he was in the gifted/advanced classes. I felt like I was at a small impasse. You see, she's a former superintendent of schools and they aren't always the biggest supporters of HSlers. I opted to just say taht we homeschool. Silence. I told her that he does 4th grade work and she said, that's probably not enuf is it? Well definitely not in science and probably not math. He reads at a Jr High grade level and she said that she could easily believe that. I told her that he fools ppl cuz he's so verbal and uses (what I"ve been told) large vocabulary. She said that was indicative of ppl who are very bright and part of how she knew. I told her we just don't stress that idea w/him and that I spend more time staying IN FRONT OF HIM than anything!LOL She was very gracious and sincere about it all and I guess it just made me pause. Usually I hear how active he is and how he doesn't like to keep quiet. Instead I get complimented on his intelligence. It was nice to hear that for a change. Mat's not a 'bad' child at all. He's just immature and because he does 'impress' ppl w/his verbal skills, they expect the whole package. And he's just not there yet. I mean he's only almost 9! And truthfully I've not pushed him to be 'ahead' cuz if he is ever integrated into PS, I think it would make things that much harder for him. I certainly don't hold him back, but I don't push him super hard (nor do I want him burned out on the thrill of learning--which he loves).
