Sunday School

And that strawberry rhubarb crisp I made for Sunday School? We have 2 older widows in our class and they are both a trip. But one just started in.....oh I haven't had rhubarb in years, etc, etc.  She said they ate it when they found it in Germany. No sugar. And dandelions. Not greens, not fried--just picked them and ate them.We were all quite perplexed by now. Turns out she was 6-10yo during WWII and her dad was killed as a commander in Russia (I'm not sure which side), her gfather was killed in Aushwitz (Sp?) for speaking out against Hitler so they were homeless and just roamed Germany and ate what they found growing and slept wherever. She got sent to US when she was 14 to live w/her aunt and made it thru HS in 3 years, despite knowing NO English when she got here and having only had 5 years of school in Germany. She went on to marry an abusive man and now works w/in battered women's shelter's After her kids were old enuf, she used to go to nursing homes and gather the ppl who knew German and read the bible to them in German (I asked if she was still fluent). AMAZING PERSON!!!!!!!! All because I brought somethign with rhubarb!LOL We didn't even have class cuz we were so fascinated and peppering her w/questions (she did not care--she gives talks about this stuff). She talked about the nightmares and stuff.

Wow! She does sound like an amazing woman. I would have loved listening to her talk!

My sister and I used to eat rhubarb right out of the garden. Very tart! Can't say that I have ever eaten dandelions though.

Wow! Fascinating! Thanks for sharing it! Just think, in a few years, she might not be around to share those stories...Hmm that makes me think!
