I decided to buy a "teacher lesson plan" book, why? Well, originally I thought I would plan out our weeks, then I decided I would record after the fact ideas that came to me, now I realize, my $15 investment is really just there as gentle reminder of how different homeschooling is from those who truly need that organizer! I mean, start with subjects. It asks me to divide my days into 8 subjects. Well, just as soon as I came up with one, I was already subdividing the subject lines into two. Now I have 16 possible subjects, but I really feel there could be more. How exactly do you track your son taking apart a clock to see how it works? Is that science? Then what is the family finding a dried up grasshopper and taking him home to investigate his parts, and mommy looking up online what the are formally called? Is that still the same subject as your daughter picking flowers and then recreating them with beeswax molding clay? Also, the planner only allows for 5 days. Hmmm....which 5 days merit "schooling" and which two days are not? I started with Sunday through Thursday, as Saturday is our sabbath. Then I added Friday, because Dad is home that day and plays piano and checkers(math!) with the children. Well, what about the fact that on our lazy Saturday afternoon my daughter begs me for a phonics lesson? I refuse, stating it is "my sabbath" so she proceeds to get out her tablet anyway and practice our last lesson. Is this learning I should have in my book? Ah, and the examples go on. Tomorrow is a holiday, but rest assured I will be doing literature (reading a chapter book to my children), science (breakfast will be pancakes, and we are long overdue for some cookies around here), and some geography (as my son is constantly wondering where things are in the world). So, do I mark my book holiday or record all of our activities? I know I have read it a hundred times, yet I have to put it out there once more, be slow to buy in homeschooling. Much of what you need is in the being and perfectly free. I have a $15 planner to show for it! -Mary Robin

Home birth

So I am reading an interesting book with thorough discourse on the subject of birth, it is called BIRTH. The author, though decidedly atheistic, and certainly feministic, things she and I do not share, and I agree on one thing, childbirth is best in the home and society, especially the established medical society, works against this happening. After two great hospital births, I finally convinced my husband to have a homebirth. We did, alone, and it was beautiful. My third son was born in our bathtub at 6am with my husband catching him and guiding him toward the surface for his first breath. Natural birth is so different from hospital births, even when you use no drugs and allow no vaginal views during the birth, hospitals still make birth out to be so medicinal, when it is really so lovely, so intimate, so beautiful in a woman's home surrounded by her husband and children. I just wish for more women to experience the joys of being at home when their little ones are ushered into the world.

Inspiration comes in waves, often I am looking for it to continue the journey in good conscience as I am convicted to set out. My love of all things beautiful and true led me to homeschooling, and blogspots like this one, keep me going. Hopefully, writing will be a good outlet for sharing, in cyberspace, by sharing nonetheless, with friends who are on a similar path to mine. Thanks for stopping by, more to come shortly.
