They called it the "Back to the Land Movement," what do we call this movement?

If you are a homesteader, you have undoubtedly been influenced by the "Back to the Land Movement" of the 70's.  Some of us are children of the movement and some of you are probably original "movers".  We get our books, reference materials, and guidance from that movement.  I owe much of my personal lifestyle choices to being a child of that movement.  However, there is a stirring in my heart that is not captured by any phrase, title, or movement that I am yet to hear about.

The longing of my heart is to see women embrace the power of nurturing our families within our homes.

The other day my mother said to me, "I know how much you always dreamed of making it big in corporate America."  I replied that I never dreamed of that, but of staying home and raising a family.  The problem is that I did all the things the modern feminist movement told me I was suppose to do - I went to college and got a Master of Business Administration degree, I got a job, and then I got a better job.  I moved up the management ladder and worked harder and harder to find satisfaction in my profession.  The satisfaction did not come and after ten years of marriage and no children, I desperately wanted a family.

We fostered children and eventually adopted.  We will soon be a family with six children.  Despite my years of homemaking in the evenings and weekends, I was unprepared for the demands of raising a family that would pull me daily in so many different directions each and every day.  I longed to be  home, but was frustrated when I was there.  I longed to be home, but we had a standard of living that was difficult to downsize quickly.  I longed to be home, but everyone wanted to know how I could give up my dreams, ambitions, and goals.

However, the old dreams, goals, and ambitions had been replaced.  Now my dream was to raise children that understood their role is this world as being a blessing to others.  Now my goal was to raise healthy children.  Now my ambition was to protect their hearts and minds from a culture that has gone astray.

Part 1 of a 3 part series "Nuturing Our Families."

I had never heard of the "back to the land movement." I had never heard of homesteading.... I just wanted a home in the country where I could raise children and chickens and a goat and bees. It wasn't until I found HSB2 that I realized I was not the only one! and I like the term "homesteading" - it implies building a HOME in the wilderness of the world. 150 years ago, that was a physical wilderness; today it is a spiritual wilderness, I think.
I cannot wait to read more of your entries on this topic!

I did everything a good girl should do too. Got my degree in Elementary Education. Married the love of my life. The joy of teaching was destroyed by the politics. Adopted my beautiful boy. I am now a homemaker. I am so excited to stumble on this site to find people like me.
