On the Homestead

There are lots of things going on right now on our homestead and in our home.  Some critical transitions and changes are upon us, some of which I'll share more when they are more finalized.  In our home we are praying on several matters.

One is about homeschooling our children.  We believe this week will be our oldest daughter's final week at school.  We are going to start with her and get into a routine before removing our next child.  I have felt for a long time that this was the right direction for our family, but it has seemed impossible with my still working outside the home.  DH has volunteered to oversee about half the subjects so his involvement has made this more of a reality.  More so than the educational training, this decision is about training our daughter's behavior, attitude, and spirit.  She continues to make bad choices and we want to have her close to us so that we can correct her as we see the bad behavior occurring.

Another aspect of training our daughter has led us to pray on another subject - dress wearing.  I have researched this subject for year and I have prayed about it.  I have consulted with DH and asked him to pray but we have never been in agreement on whether we should be all dress wearing.  We attend a church where the women are dress wearing and we have always respected that when around the congregation.  We are in prayer again on this matter as another tool in helping our oldest daughter understand and foster the correct behavior, attitude, and spirit as well as training modesty.

Around the homestead we have been busy cleaning, sorting, purging, and organizing.  I think I have been through nearly every closet and cabinet that has needed cleaning.  Things are feeling much more in order now.  We are also working on our budget right now and have made some cutbacks.  I have cut our food budget drastically and am trying to utilize lots of soups to stretch our food dollars.  I have also cut our "diaper" budget but I am not sure if I will be able to keep it so low.  We are using more cloth, but they aren't very practical for potty training and we have two potty training right now.  Those pull up things are so expensive and they only seem to work well with potty training if you change them every time they are the least bit wet.

Now is also the time of year that we are evaluating our animals and deciding what new animals we want to purchase.  We have a couple types that we are considering.  We were suppose to sit down yesterday and make some decisions, but we didn't get around to it.  We are also planning a few upgrades around the house as we begin our slow remodeling project.  We will be re-doing and updating our home over the next few years.  We are beginning with the children's rooms.

I hope all is well on your homestead . . .

When I pulled my children from ps, it took us many years and many different styles of books and learning to get adjusted, and we are still working on it. It is year nine, and every day makes an accommodating change. Don't get discouraged, whatever you do. Remember, what is the focus of your learning? What the world says, or what God has put upon your hearts. It takes a lot of patience because of the learning (damage) that has been done while in ps. I notice the difference from the children that I pulled (k, 2, 5 grade) from the child that never went to public school.

I so agree with Heather. It takes a long time to de-program kids. One advantage to homeschooling is learning in the fashion they can best learn, but it takes time to learn how they learn. Remember if God called you to home school He will see you through, but some days/weeks won't be easy!
