The weather has turned chilly around here and it rains most days. We had a break in the weather today that allowed us to do some work in the garden. Anybody that thinks gardening is not a year around project is just mistaken. This month we are finishing the harvest, planting garlic, and mulching the herb garden and strawberry patch. Leftovers are going to the pigs and chickens and we are moving pots and gardening items to the locations they will be needed during the winter. We still have some winter vegetables in the garden and I am not sure that we will get to harvest them but I am hopeful. Next month we will begin the planning process so that we are ready to order seeds in January and set up our seedling operation that month. My oldest DD will be planning the garden as part of her homeschool Science. She will be working with my husband and I to plan enough to feed all of us and stock a roadside stand we are going to start. Then she will track all the costs, raw material input, and the total output so we can use the information to make calculations. I posted earlier about not beginning my sewing until November, but I had to start early this year. For one we have had so much rain we can't do anything else. Secondly, my oldest DD is growing so fast that all of her dresses are too short to be modest. One mistake I have made is sewing at the same pace for my #2DD as the oldest. With handme downs #2DD has more dresses than she needs while the oldest does not have enough. I have done one dress for each of the older daughters and am working on one for the youngest. I have two more dresses planned this season for each, but I think I will need to do at least two additional ones for the oldest. I was also able to pick up some of my knitting and quilting. I finished a shawl I have been knitting for myself. I worked a little on my quilt I have been hand sewing by 4 year old DS wrote all over the pieces I was working on. I can't get the ink out so I have to re-cut the pieces and start over. Ugh! I have finished my holiday shopping for the kids and have almost all of their gifts wrapped. I can now turn my attention to my DH and parents, siblings, etc. Our holiday pictures are scheduled for the first part of November and we will be getting cards as part of that package. I have our Christmas letter half written. We are baking to stock up for the coming month and when we get a little ahead we will work on some holiday cookies. Anybody have any special holiday cookie recipes that use whole wheat flour and alternatives to sugar? Happy homesteading . . .
