A Quiet Morning Starts a Busy Day

All is quiet, at least for a few more moments.  I am sure my little ones will be up shortly.  My girls are already up and taking a rare moment to just sit quietly on the couch.  Their job lately has been to occupy the 3 little ones while DH and I work in the garden.  The girls are disappointed they can't work in the garden, but the little ones just don't understand not stepping on the plants.  Perhaps when the plants are a little bigger and harder to miss.

We are very busy in the garden trying to keep the weeds down until the little plants get a start.  We only have a few more rows to weed.  We have 47 rows that are 60 feet long each, so being down to 3 more rows to weed is a major acocmplishment.  It has really helped that DH traded some labor for a rototiller which we are using in between the rows.  We finished planting the last of the summer corn and beans yesterday and after taking stock of where we are, I have finished planning the fall/winter garden and will try and order the seeds today.

All the posts are up for my herb garden fence.  We hoped to have it finished but DH assumed he all the supplies needed and it turned out he did not.  We used the time to put up the string for the greenhouse and mark where the footings need to be dug out.  We modified the greenhouse design slightly to increase the roof exposure to the south, we decided to side the north wall to decrease heat loss at night, we increased the north side block footing to create more space that will be heated during the day and release heat at night, and we decided to put a fireplace in that we had been saving for DH's shop.  We will look for another one for his shop and use the one we have to keep the greenhouse warm on those cold nights.  Putting siding on the north side will improve the view from the road and will allow me to have a window with a cute little garden box hanging below.  I think it will be very charming.  I look at the footprint on the ground and I am worried it will be too small, but the main purpose is to start seedlings so it should be enough.

We also measured the chicken coop for siding and talked to the guy who is going to mill the pieces.  I believe it will be rough sewn fir pieces that we will cover the chicken coop in and then paint red to match our barn.  DH was very patient to wait and find someone who could do the siding so that he could have it the way he wanted.  We could have used something manufactured but this will look very rustic and farm-like.  I am getting excited to have all of these projects done.  It will really improve the look of our little homestead.
