Saturday Morning

Another Saturday morning and I am in a homesteading mood.  Yesterday we got 18 new pullets.  I got three different varieties to see which we like best and if there are some differences in them.  Plus I thought it would be nice to see some different colors out there pecking at the ground.  They are nestled in the barn in a water tank with heat lamps on them.  I ordered 30 cornish crossers to raise as meat birds.  They will come in a couple of more weeks.  At dinner last night DH said he didn't remember agreeing to any more chickens.  Oops.  I haven't told him about the 30 additional ordered, so I am going to have to break that gently.  When we discussed how many chickens we would butcher this summer and needing to replace our laying hens, I thought that was permission to buy the chickens.

Last night the kids and I finished all of the tidying and weekly cleaning, but I have to catch up on laundry today.  I need to finish the menu plan, do some baking and cooking, and plan out the household projects that need to get done during the remainder of the year.

We are also beginning to stock up on food and supplies and I need to organize some closets to fit stuff in.  This is sometimes a controversial subject amongst Christians.  My belief is that our country is overly dependent upon a system of grocery stores and shipping supplies from long distances.  If there was a disruption to that system, we should be prepared within in our homes.  Possible disruptions could occur for many reasons such as the bird flu, an oil shortage, a terrorist attack, etc.  I feel called to be prepared and I believe that calling comes from the Lord.

Other projects today will include starting some yogurt, tilling the garden, and planting the raspberries, strawberries and asparagus.  Some of the seedlings we planted last week are already up, which makes me anxious to get some more started.  I did not quite finish the seed order yet, but based on cash flow that will have to wait until the 1st of March.
