I am on a quest to wipe out colds for our family. I am always the first and sometimes only victim, but it has become a monthly occurrence that I am sick. The older children and DH are rarely sick while the littles sometimes suffer with me. In so many ways I feel that we are doing the right things when it comes to building our immune systems and eating healthy. We eat naturally fermented foods, whole grains, organic, well-balanced diets. We avoid sugar, MSG, food dyes, and perservatives. We raise most of our own food, bake our own from scratch, butcher our own meat, gather our own eggs, etc, etc, etc. However, if I am totally honest with myself, I do a much better job managing everyone else's diets rather than my own. I am always up early packing everyone's lunches and making breakfast. If I don't feel like eating what everyone else is, I just stop and pick up something on the way. I eat lunches out with co-workers or run through the fast food drive thru when I am short on time. I visit the vending machine when feeling sluggish in the afternoon. I then make things worse by relying on the old favorites when I am sick, which means drowning my system in processed sugars. Well, I am sick of being sick! Things are going to change. I have done some research and I am placing some orders for some herbs so that I can make sure that I have the natural cold remedies on hand for the next time. I have been using garlic in olive oil for my sore throat this time and I am happy with the results, but I am also making sure I have some coconut oil on hand to boost my body's ability to fight off infections. I am making some elderberry tincture to help. I am not going to allow myself to feel pressured into using sugars to feel better. Most importantly I am going to break my bad habits and stop destroying all of my good efforts. |
