Fixing the Chicken's New Home

We had a great day outside today working on some outside chores.  It has been raining quite a bit this month, but today was sunny although cold.  After breakfast we headed outside to have a family work day.  It is such an uplifting time to work together to make improvements to our farm.  I was reading on another blog recently about the benefits of working together as a family.  Additionally, I was discussing with my father how he worked the farm independently when I was a child and was not good at involving us children.  I realized that too many of the chores have been falling to DH and that I don't even know what the daily animal chores involve.  So this week I have been making a conscious effort to help outside more.  Today was another great opportunity.

We had built the 200 square foot chicken coop last spring, but had been unable to move the chickens in as we were using it for temporary storage while we rebuilt our barn that burnt down.  After several evening attacks on our chickens, we had to move them in without having the opportunity to prepare an outside run.  For about a month now they have been just living inside.  Today we refitted the old dog kennel to be the new chicken run.  This had been our plan all along but we just never had time to finish it.  While DH worked on connecting the old kennel to the coop, I weeded my herb garden which is next to the coop.  I also put in a gravel walk way thru the herb garden to pick up eggs from the laying boxes that jut out the side of the coop.

The new coop also includes a storage area for chicken supplies and some garden supplies, which we also cleaned out.  There was still some construction materials in this storage area so we moved all of those to the barn and shop.  DH and the kids then finished tearing down the old coop and burned the pieces.  It looks so nice to have these items finished.  The place just looks more cleaned up and pulled together.  DH and I both desire for our property to look clean and organized.  We work hard to pick things up and keep things put away outside.

Hope your enjoying your homestead today . . .
