Stormy November

As November rolls in with some wet and wild weather, the homestead continues to be as busy as ever.  The door got put on the cold storage area, separating it from our furnace room.  This was just in time for us to bring in the rest of the garden.  I would still like to put some apples in there for the coming winter.  We are eating tomatoes, potatoes, and carrots out of the cold storage on a regular basis.  I continue to shell the dry beans and turn the corn drying in there.

The canning kitchen has become home to drying herbs and herbal tinctures.  I have serveral herbs and some elderberries soaking in alcohol for extraction.  I also have been gathering and storing some dry medicinal herbs.  From the herb garden I have brought in several culinary herbs and still have some more to bring in for drying.

The chickens have moved to their new coop, but not in time to save them from the dog.  I lost four more hens one night.  I have only two laying hens left and only one is actually laying.  I am looking for people who are getting rid of hens in the area and trying to build back up.  I hate to buy baby chicks until spring when I can keep them adequately warm.

The barn was finished just in time for winter and now we are working on pig housing.  We have committed to buying a sow that should farrow in December.  We need to get a place prepared for her so that we can bring her home.  We have a smaller, three stall spot but the fencing needs to be fixed before a pig can live there.

With all the rain we have been having our pond has filled up nicely.  It appears to be holding water, but I guess that we won't really know that until we have a dry spell.  I am dreaming of seeing some ducks out there on that little pond, but I won't be able to unless something is done about the dog.

In addition to inside projects like knitting, I am also focusing on cleaning and organizing.  This is the time of year I begin sorting thru paperwork.  It seems to multiply each year.  I have cleaned out about two wheelbarrows full, which DH will burn.  It is such a good feeling to enter the new year with everything sorted and organized.  It also helps us prepare to complete our taxes in a more orderly fashion.

Happy homesteading to you . . .
