Update from the Farm

I can 't believe it has been a month since I have had an opportunity to post.  We are having some lovely fall weather here and the garden is still producing.  With the kids back in school I have not had the time to spend on the garden that I should.  I have tomatoes to pick and can, corn to dry, peppers to do something with, dry beans to dry, etc, etc.  I have been busy canning pears, applesauce, and juice.  We have pressed both apple cider and grape juice.  We are extremely blessed that my father passed on the family apple cider press when he moved this last year.

The barn is almost done and we will be purchasing a cow and bull calf soon to add to our homestead.  The pigs are near butchering size and DH is looking for a boar to breed with the female so that we will have piglets.  DS is going to raise a pig for 4H this year and DH is going to raise some pigs to sell for roasting.  The goats continue to get moved around to eat down brush and are doing well.  We have lost a couple more chickens.  At least one was eaten by the dog and we are not sure if got the other as well.  I am going to be watching the newspaper for an opportunity to replace them.

My fall garden is not doing well.  Like I said, interest and time have both dropped off.  Without the fall rains we would have to be watering and we just don't have the time.  I still have some items to plant and hopefully DH will take over the watering.

Happy Homesteading . . .

Yes, it is hard keeping up with posts this time of year. I too am canning (or should I say I am done!) Snow had come and gone but my mindset is now into settling in for the winter. I miss those fires!
