Country Neighbors

My brother-in-law (BIL) had been visiting for several months and while we were out to dinner celebrating his departure, the pigs got out.  The pigs have been living in our converted dog kennel since they were small.  While secure, it really does not offer them the roaming room we would prefer.  So DH and BIL made them a new fenced in area.  Morning one the pigs are in the new pen, morning two the pigs are right outside the new pen (pen is re-secured), morning three the pigs are in, morning four in again, morning five in the old pig pen/kennel.  Now that is odd, how did they get in the kennel?

I call DH and asked if he moved them back and he reports that he found them in there in the morning with the gate latched closed.  He reasons that one of our close neighbors (two very kind and helpful gentlemen) must have found them out and put them back in the old pen.  Later in the day some neighbors stop by that we have never met and report that they found them out, half a mile down the road, and almost hit them.  So what do good country neighbors do?  They drive to our home and finding us not home but figuring the pigs must be ours, dig thru the sheds until they find some food, travel back to the pigs, and lure/herd them home and into the kennel.  It must not have been easy, because herding pigs is never easy and we did find the man's cap in the driveway.  Not to mention that it was dark or almost dark as they herded the pigs home.

Experiences like these make living in the country worthwhile.  Part of the interesting thing for me is that earlier this spring multiple people stopped at our house to report that cows were out.  However, the cows were not ours and we were not really sure who they belonged to.  We were just sitting down to dinner and I told DH that we had to drive down and see if we could get the cows in or find their owner.  He did not get it and could not figure out why he had to leave his dinner to take care of somone else's cows.  I told him "that is what country neighbors do."  So we left our hot meal and went to do what we could.  The blessing came back to us and I was proved right - that is what country neighbors do.
