Lazy Days of Summer

I would characterize today as one of those lazy days.  It is just so dang hot who wants to work.  My son reports it is 110 degrees outside.  I am hunkered down in the house.  Even with the heat pump trying to cool the house the upstairs is in the mid 80's.  In the basement it is tolerable with the fan running.  On days like this I don't feel like much of a homesteader.  It is not very self-reliant to run the AC.

I spent this morning shopping the local farmer's market.  I was overly enthusiastic about the local cheeses and came home with more than I should of.  I did come home with some needed items.  I also splurged on some lamb shoulder steaks.  I really enjoy the markets this time of year.  On the way home I stopped for blueberries and bought 30 pounds to freeze.  It was just too hot to pick, so I just paid the higher price for the already picked ones.

Our garden is suffering through this heat with no water.  We have not been able to water for the past week as our spring is only supplying enough for our household needs and even then we are having to conserve.  DH talked with the previous owner and he has agreed to let us water our garden when he irrigates his garden next door.  This will be a huge relief but DH has to fix some pipes first.  When we put in the electric lines and water lines to the new barn there were some pipes that got dug up.  I warned DH that he may want to find out if we needed those before he re-buried them all busted up.  He didn't care to deal with it then, so now he knows they are to the irrigation system.  Oh well - I tried.  Next week things will begin getting watered.

It is a good thing the garden will have water again soon.  It will be time soon to start the fall garden.  I am going to work with DH to get manure added to the planting area and get it well prepared for the items that will be direct planted and those that will be transplanted.  Around here it is nearly impossible to find transplants for the fall, so I will have to stay on top of mine or there will be not fall garden.  For the fall I am planning on broccoli, cauliflower, beets, onions, spinach, swiss chard, pac choi, chinese cabbage, peas, and lettuce.  We usually have mild winters with the exception of a few cold freezes in December and January.  It is probable that I could have fresh veggies from the garden for awhile into the late fall.  Oh the dreams of a new homesteader.

Yes, we love the homesteading, but I guess I have to confess that some modern conviences are pretty nice to have around sometimes. I would love to bag up some of our water and send to you...I think I will try growing rice next year. :o)

I'm in the Rogue Valley here in Oregon and this heat is unbearable! We just had our county fair and I work at it each year and it was 112 on Saturday! It's finally starting to cool down here and will hopefully be in the 80's this weekend. Hope you are staying cool, sometimes running the AC is the only way (IMO). I love reading your blogs. Make sure to post a picture of your barn when it's done! Have a great day!
