Disappointed

Posted on Sunday, July 13, 2008 at 01:36

- Post Comment Well I'm sad to say that my first experience with camp was not terribly positive.  I tried to contact my daughter mid week to wish her a happy birthday and she never called back.  Once she got home I was told she never got the message.  Ok not too big of a deal.  As the kids were piling off the bus I heard one mother ask..."What happened to your nose?"  I looked and her son looked as if he had fallen on the concrete and scrapped his nose.  His reply was..."Oh that's  sun burn"  as he proceeded to pull his shirt to the side and reveal his shoulders which too looked like he had a second or third degree burn.  I was mortified.  Here we send our children up, thinking they will be well cared for and this happened.  That is just not acceptable.  He was only a year or two older than my daughter and as an adult I can't reach my back.  Are these kids expected to lotion themselves up?  Children just don't think about these things.  When I asked my daughter whether she too wore the sunscreen that was packed she said "only the first day, after that we didn't have time to put it on".  WHAT????  I have heard a few stories while they were away about some kids several years ago getting sick and no one calling to tell the parents.  They didn't find out about it till after the kids came home.  This is also disturbing to me.  She said her experience  was ok.  There were some fun parts and some boring parts, but that she doesn't want to go again next year.  I'm fine with that due to what I have seen and heard thus far.  It's too bad cause not I'm not so sure I'm going to want my younger ones to go now.  Oh well, look at all the money we will save.

From a former camp counselor...

Hey connie! It's Lee Ann, I'm just not logged in.
I hate to hear that about camp!!! That's not good!

As a former counselor though, I have to say, you're talking about "kids" who do not have kids and they do not think about things like sunburn, because they have not been trained to think that way! They need to be though. As a counselor, I don't think I ever put sunscreen on a child. Also, with all the new policies, counselors are highly encouraged NOT to touch children. So, it's one of those things...yes, you are expecting them to be well-taken care of, but unless you notify the people in charge of what you see lacking, camp will not get any better.

I encourage you to tell the head people some of the things you thought they did right...then tell them what you think will have to change before you would ever want to send another one of your children to their camp again.

At our camp we have changed a lot of things due to the feedback from parents. So, give it a shot...it can't hurt!

About Me

I am a mother of three. I desire to grow closer with the Lord and raise children who love and honor Him. Knowing I am a work in progress, I have decided to start this blog to keep in touch with family and friend from a far and perhaps meet some new ones who can help me in this journey of life.
