Can someone explain to me what they know about timeshares? I don't know much about them and would like to know if any of you have them? Do you think it is a good thing to have a timeshare? Please post your thoughts!
We have had our timeshare for about 9yrs and love it. I suppose it depends on the individual timeshare but, ours is for 7 days, the week of July 4th. If that is not where we want to spend our vacation this year, we call them, pay $50 and swap it to another location/ date, even a cruise. If we choose not to go on a vacation this year we can call them and they will rent it out for us and that 'rent' goes to us.
As far as the money part...it is just like a house with a deed. We pay taxes on ours every year and it is all filed on our taxes.
That probably didn't help much. If you have specific questions I will be glad to answer them the best I can.
Our family has a timeshare and we love using it - it's really fun. It may be different in the USA from NZ, but the things you have to check before buying a week at a place is: how much are the annual fees and how many does it accomodate. We find that most timeshares only sleep 6, although there are some for larger families available. Each one is different, I guess. If you can buy a week for a good price, it is a great way to have a family holiday. The floating weeks (as opposed to fixed weeks) are the best, because they're flexible. My husband's father bought 4 weeks at a timeshare and we share it around the family. We've added a couple of weeks now (his Dad passed away years ago), but we seldom use the actual timeshare that he bough, choosing to swap our weeks around and use other destinationst. Family members have used timeshares all over the world at much less cost than a hotel would be. Some family members even used it for their honeymoon! The weeks usually go from Friday to Friday, and you know you're going to get a certain standard in a timeshare. There is usually facilities for cooking, and a timeshare generally has activities, games, library, pool etc, for the use of the guests.
Hope this is helpful.

We do not have a time share. We had looked into one two years ago, but being fellow Dave Ramsey; Total Money Makeover participants (saw it on your side bar!) we read up on what he had to say about it and decided against it.
