Make all of my own bread

Toastmaster TBR20H Bread Maker Image

I am on a new quest.  My new goal is to make all of our bread instead of buying it.  I have a Toastmaster bread machine.  So far from experience I think my oven bakes bread better then the bread machine.  I decided to give it another shot with the bread machine this morning and I am making a loaf of whole wheat.  Hopefully it will turn out.  Does anyone have any yummy bread machine recipes?  Does anyone bake bread exclusively?  I would love any pointers when it comes to baking bread.

I use my breadmachine for kneading the dough and then I bake the bread in the oven.

i have had good success with bread machine recipes from allrecipes.com i don't usually try them unless they have almost all 5 stars, and the reviews are super helpful. their recipe for clone of a cinnabon is very yummy! :) i also wanted to share a money saving tip from mary hunt and everyday cheapskate . . .
"The regular price for Red Star yeast at my market is $2.72 for three .25 ounce packets. That works out to $.90 per packet. On the same shelf is a 4-ounce jar of Red Star yeast for $5.99, or $.37 for the amount in one packet. Sam’s Club sells two pounds of yeast for less than $5, and that drops the price to less than a dime for a packet’s worth of yeast. Pretty cheap! If you don’t have membership to a warehouse club like Sam’s Club, inquire at a local commercial bakery. Most are happy to sell commercial-grade yeast in bulk. Stored in the freezer, yeast has a very long shelf life"

I highly recommend checking out Breadbeckers.com - I use her recipe book and it is wonderful. Some pointers on homemade bread I've learned over the years. Use the amount of flour she says - whole wheat bread dough should be slightly sticky - once the dough begins to cling to your dough hook - no more flour - it will make a much lighter loaf. Make sure you let it need for the full 10 min or longer - that will help it. Also once you pull it out of ove place a slightly damp towel over the cooling loaves and this helps to soften the crusts.
I make most of our own homemade bread - I will make 6-8 loaves at a time (1 large loaf & 1 small loaf per batch) and freeze. We eat it for our breakfast toast, toast with soup, and sometimes sandwiches. The children have come to prefer it. 2 weeks ago I was out and bought some store bought. As my 6 yr old sat eating her PB & J on a busy day - she said, "Mom..... I like your bread better!" :0) Daily bread!!!

Hi from Down Under,
I have been using this recipe:
http://articles.urbanhomemaker.com/index.php?article=83 from the urbanhomemaker, and it is the best. I use 2 cups whole wheat and about 4 1/2 white to make it a light bread. It makes two large loaves. I put it in the breadmaker on the dough setting for kneading, and then bake it in the oven. You get a lovely crust doing it in the oven. I got that tip from someone else here on homesteadblogger. Let us know how your bread turns out. I've just started doing my own, and we all love it so much I've given up buying bread now.

Yummy recipes

Try Allrecipes.com. There are alot of good breadmachine recipes and rated too, to give you a better idea of the end result of the bread. I found a couple good bun/roll recipes and Dh is glad I checked them out. I tried making sandwich rolls with my regular bread recipes and they were too heavy and too crumbly... the allrecipe recipe I tried was great. I am unsure of the exact recipe at the moment, but I like to try the highest rated recipes and usually am quite happy with them.

Warmly, ~Melissa

I love my Zojirushi bread machine. It's so easy and it comes out in an actual loaf shape. I too get all of my recipes and supplies from www.breadbeckers.com.
Good luck!
Have a blessed weekend.

I am also trying to bake most of my bread rather than buy it. I don't have a bread machine, but have a bosch mixer that kneads the bread nicely. We have been using a whole wheat recipe that we enjoy from 'The family homestead' http://www.thefamilyhomestead.com/index.html

regards,
Natalie.
