Update:

I knew that posting this on here would be a good idea!  I posted it last night, and when I turned on the computer this morning, two different ladies had sent me information on this painting!  Thank you so much!!!!! I am not much of a "print" person, but I really adored this.

Thanks again ladies!!! As my daughter says, "you rock!" :-)

A while back I came across this lovely artwork.  I believe I was in a search for "apron" images, but can't remember.  I saved this image, but would love to find a print of it.  I have searched and searched and tried to find this image again, and am at a loss.  If anyone has seen this before, or has an idea of an artist, please let me know.  Two of my children have said it reminds them of me...aren't they the sweetest?   :-)

Table Project

12:42 PM, Friday, November 21, 2008 .. Posted in On the Farm .. 3 comments .. Link
When we moved to our current home, we bought a dining room set second hand.  It was very solid, and well built, but needed refinishing.  The table had several marks and scratches on the top, and had been chewed on by a dog on the bottom.

So I decided to get started...thankfully we have a double door to the back porch and were able to move the table outside to sand....

JR helping sand...  JD helped as well, but I didn't have the camera handy when he did...

Almost done sanding...

And here it is.....it is still wet, but it is looking so much better!  You can see it "stretched" and one of the leaves sitting in it.  I still have to do the other leaf and the benches and chairs, but those will have to wait until spring.  It is too cold to work outside anymore, and the stain doesn't like to dry well when it is cold.  We are pleased with the results.

Bug spray for horses

11:56 AM, Monday, September 29, 2008 .. Posted in On the Farm .. 0 comments .. Link
Our farrier shared a tip with us about bug control for our horse.  Since getting Strider, we have tried just about every bug repellent on the shelf at the farm supply store.  Nothing seemed to work!  It didn't matter how cheap or how pricey it was.  The poor horse had knots and welts all over him from the bombardment of the bugs.

Well, she told us to take a spray bottle and mix a half and half mixture of apple cider vinegar and a thin oil like canola oil.  We put it in the bottle and give it a shake, and spray.  And it works!!!!  We just shake the bottle every few squeezes of the nozzle to keep it mixed.

Here in NC, we have about every biting bug you can imagine, (I think those yellow deer flies are the worst) and this actually keeps Strider from being devoured.

I just thought I would share it.  My dd shared it on her blog, and other horse-lovers have appreciated her sharing it.

Something Egg-citing!

Well, our young turkey hen has laid an egg!

From left to right, young turkey egg, young chicken hen egg, normal chicken hen egg.  I would imagine that like a chicken, as she ages and matures, her eggs will get larger.

Horsey Help

We FINALLY found a FARRIER!!!!!!  What a nightmare it has been.  We got a horse in May, and have spent months trying to track down a farrier.  It was becoming quite ridiculous how hard it was proving to be. First, trying to get one who would a) answer their phone or b) return a call.

The yellow pages were worthless, none of the numbers worked.  So we started asking around, got a couple numbers and no one would get on the other end of the line.  We finally struck dirt, or so we thought.  We had one who answered his phone, even set up an appointment, only to be a no-show after my hubby got off work to make sure he was there.  UGH!!!!

So I sent JM on a mission, to get on the NCHorseNews.com forum and ask for a number.  She received several responses right away.  We called the one that looked the best to us, and HOORAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  She not only answered my calls, she was very informative, very helpful.  She actually CAME when she said she would, and talked us through the whole process, explaining everything she did and why, the parts of the horse's foot, everything.  She is a keeper!!!!!!!

So great big Kudos to Cat!!!!

So I recommend her to anyone that lives in my area!!!!!  (You know if you do )

A very sad day

08:51 AM, Monday, August 25, 2008 .. Posted in On the Farm .. 1 comments .. Link
Sometimes living a country life isn't always fun.  Yesterday was a very sad day around here.    Over the past week, our baby goat, Oreo, has been very sick and progressively getting worse and worse.  We tried everything we could do to nurse him back to health, but yesterday he had to be put down.  We knew he would be dead within the next day or so, and couldn't stand to see the sweet little baby suffering.

We will eventually get another goat, but from a different source.  We have recently heard that the place we got Oreo from has a history of sickly animals, and don't want to go through that again.  In the meantime, Brownie will have to be content with the attention that she gets from us.

Around the house

We have been working on some of the chores around here, and the boys were thrilled to help with this one!

A neighbor had a tree come down in a recent storm, as well as a few other trees that had come down recently.  He told us to take them if we wanted them....we hitched up some straps to the truck and dragged them home, where the "men-folk" set to work cutting up the trees into workable sized logs.  The pine trees are for the outside fires, the hard wood for the house.

Strider lazily grazing with some of the hens nearby...

And our male turkey showing off for the hen...

A Sad Morning

08:25 AM, Tuesday, August 5, 2008 .. Posted in On the Farm .. 3 comments .. Link

Well, I got up this morning, grabbed the coffee pot and walked to the sink.  Turned on the faucet and looked out the window, and saw FEATHERS Everywhere!  I set the pot down and went outside, and something got our chickens!!!!!  We had 17 chickens, and now we only have 12.  That is 5 chickens gone!  We are very upset.  We think it was a pack of wild dogs that we have heard about, because a single animal will not take off with 5 chickens.  It is possible that the others have just run away trying to escape, and that they might come back, but we don’t think that is likely.  We walked all over the area calling them, and got no response.  This is bad too, because it is summer.  We usually don’t lose hens until the winter when food sources are scarce.

So needless to say this afternoon, I will be working to reinforce the hen house, because once an animal finds a food source, they’ll keep coming back.  I am also loading my shotgun and keeping it handy…
