The Mystery of the Mystery Chicken
Well, the mystery has finally been solved! This spring, we got 10 chicks, half Plymouth Barred Rocks, and half Rhode Island Reds...but from day 1, there was one rock chick that just did not seem to look like the rest. It grew faster than the others, and had slightly different markings. We had called her "coon" because of the mask on her face that reminded us of a reverse raccoon mask. After a bit, we wondered if she was simply a "he" as we had not had a Rock rooster before. Well, the older she got, the more we realized that she was simply a mystery breed. We have only had chickens for a few years, and our only experience has been with the RIR and the PBRs. I have a friend who had Buff Orphingtons, but other than those and "Polish" chickens, I couldn't identify anything.So today I took some photos of this very elusive hen.....(she sleeps in a tree like a wild bird instead of with the others in the hen house too! and we have been calling her the "bald eagle chicken) ....and set down to search.
At last we know what she is! She is a Silver Laced Wyandotte!
Hurray! Mystery Solved!
