Loving Life

Thursday, March 13, 2008 - Remedial Housekeeping: How to Dust!

I’ve told you all I’m a newbie keeper of my home, right?

Well, I’m pretty sure I’m the only person here on HSB who doesn’t know the proper way to dust.  I would like to keep a clean house. I would love to join in the Spring Cleaning. My spirit is willing, thankfully my body is able ... I'm just plain ignorant!!

In the last year I have gone from *not* dusting to dusting using expensive Clorox wet wipes $$ to clean counters, shelves, and walls to using (and wasting) paper towels with Formula 409 on every surface, to finally using old terrycloth facecloths with warm water and vinegar.

Now there could be a better way out there, but this is working so well for us. My husband is very sensitive to chemicals and chemical odors, but for some reason he's just fine with the smell of vinegar! I've gotten to actually like it myself. It smells clean to me!

So I’m posting this simple advice on dusting for my own diary benefit more than anything. It’s OK to giggle my dears!

" White vinegar is a good substitute for other cleaning supplies, because there are no nasty chemical present in vinegar. Sure, vinegar smells terrible before it evaporates, but it is precisely that bad smell that makes vinegar such a good substitute for commercial products; that smell is the acid present in vinegar, and similar acids (but more dangerous acids) are often used in commercial cleaning products. Vinegar can be used to clean just about any surface, except upholstery and fabrics."

Ok, I'm not a big duster, but... I love the idea of putting socks on hands and going to it! And what a great idea with kids. I usually use a cloth and furniture polish for wood. Other than that.... well.... ummmmm.... I'll try those socks sometime. :D

I use vinegar a lot...it works great! I use a microfiber mitten to dust. I was in the spring cleaning mood just today. This sunshine sure motivates! :-)

You have to remember to treat real wood with an oil periodically - 3-4 times a year might do it, depending on how dusty things get. I know that plain water dries wood out if that's all you use, eventually. My mom did a number on a solid oak table we had by always using water and never replenishing the wood's oils. :) I think I read somewhere that olive oil works; I'm not sure I picked up a bottle of some kind of fancy oil as my husband put quite a few hours into restoring the table of my childhood for me and I wanted him to know I was going to take good care of it. :)

There are a bunch of things I really don't know how to do; I just act like I know what I'm doing and a bunch of people act like I'm a professional! LOL
