Thursday, March 13, 2008 - Remedial Housekeeping: How to Dust!
I’ve told you all I’m a newbie keeper of my home, right?
Well, I’m pretty sure I’m the only person here on HSB who doesn’t know the proper way to dust. I would like to keep a clean house. I would love to join in the Spring Cleaning. My spirit is willing, thankfully my body is able ... I'm just plain ignorant!!
In the last year I have gone from *not* dusting to dusting using expensive Clorox wet wipes $$ to clean counters, shelves, and walls to using (and wasting) paper towels with Formula 409 on every surface, to finally using old terrycloth facecloths with warm water and vinegar.
Now there could be a better way out there, but this is working so well for us. My husband is very sensitive to chemicals and chemical odors, but for some reason he's just fine with the smell of vinegar! I've gotten to actually like it myself. It smells clean to me!
So I’m posting this simple advice on dusting for my own diary benefit more than anything. It’s OK to giggle my dears!
" White vinegar is a good substitute for other cleaning supplies, because there are no nasty chemical present in vinegar. Sure, vinegar smells terrible before it evaporates, but it is precisely that bad smell that makes vinegar such a good substitute for commercial products; that smell is the acid present in vinegar, and similar acids (but more dangerous acids) are often used in commercial cleaning products. Vinegar can be used to clean just about any surface, except upholstery and fabrics."
