Last spring, I shared a bit about our first experience on the mountain at the home of our friends. Since then, we've been up there several times. And every single time we just feel such a sense of peace and maybe a bit of jealousy. We dearly love these friends. They are cut from the same cloth as we are. They have fully integrated homesteading and working in the city. They are who we aspire to be.
Yesterday they had the church over for sledding and a bonfire. It was breathtaking. It was the steepest hill my crew has ever sled on.
The view from their home is magnificent. The sun just lit up the top of the surrounding mountains.
Of course, being MY crew, the day was not without drama. On S' second pass, he hit a snow burm, flipped, and thumped his noggin on the ground. We had talked about how important it was for him to wear a helmet when he tried out the snowboard later, but never did we think about wearing one to sled, for goodness sake! I'm pretty sure he had a slight concussion. His pupils were dilated, he was pretty dazed, and he says he doesn't remember anything between spinning and Hubby helping him up. But he was alert and acting fine, so we didn't see doc or anything. Needless to say, he was finished sledding for the day. And never did try that snowboard. He still had a slight headache when he went to bed last night (about 5 or 6 hours after the fact), so if he still has one today we may take him to Urgent Care and see what they say. But he was acting just fine last night, so I'm sure he's ok.
The rest of the church kids had a ball, however. Even C, who was terrified of going down such a huge hill. Once we got him down, there was no stopping him. He was the sled king! Of course, he is our accident prone one, so after S' little accident I was a nervous wreck every time C went down, but he never had any issues. Maybe he learned from S' mistakes. Of course, he avoided S' sled like the plague. LOL
When we left, the lights of Anchorage were just gorgeous. I could kick us for not getting a pic of it. Breathtaking!
I was a bit nervous about getting up to their house, since the entrance of their road is graced with a sign telling about the dangers ahead during the winter and how 4 wheel drive or snow chains are required. But we didn't have any trouble at all. (We do have all-wheel drive) After last night, I now fully believe we really *could* live on the mountain. We've said it for the past several months, but I was harboring a touch of doubt about the winter roads. Not so much now. Bring on the Little Slice of Heaven on the moutain-top! |
