Our Little Slice of Heaven

Our weekend

This past weekend was our church retreat.  This is something this church does every year. Being our first year here, it was our first retreat.  We go to a church campground owned by another denomination.  It was pretty awesome in that the conference room where we held services already had a pulpit and such in it.  That's just cool.

This campground is on a lake surrounded by mountains.  Beautiful.  It was such a great escape from the city.  We had 3 whole days to just focus on God.  Our theme this year was prayer and all of the classes, sermons, and devotionals connected to that theme in some way.  It was really  a great learning and growth experience.  We had a wonderful time fellowshiping with our Brothers and Sisters, too.  It was nice to get to know everyone a little better.

After the closing, my family decided to drive on north a bit to visit Talkeetna. We'd never been there and were a little over halfway already, so we turned left instead of right and went that direction.  Ever since we moved here we've been wanting to visit there.  I've heard that is the town that "Toketna" was based on in the movie Snow Dogs.  I thought it just sounded wonderfully Alaskan and that I would adore it.

I have to admit, I was pretty disappointed in myself.  I didn't love it.  It was cute.  It was quaint.  I would like to visit when it isn't swarming with 3 tour busses of people wandering the adorable little downtown.  But it was flat.  Lots of trees, yes. Beautiful, yes.  I've heard you can see Denali from there, but it was rainy and he wasn't showing his awesome face. But that was all.  I actually (gasp!) *missed* my Anchorage bowl.  I missed being able to see mountains every place I looked.  So, with a sigh, we turned around and headed home.  No Talkeetna cabin for me.  It looks too much like Missouri and Kentucky.  Mind you, I love Kentucky.  But if I'm going to be in Alaska, I want it to look like Alaska.  I want mountains.

Then yesterday we had S's bday party at my parents' house.  We went together with my parents and got him a bike. It is an exact replica of the bike he had in Kentucky. Since it has gotten warm, he's been really wishing he had it.  I felt so badly for him.  He had saved up his own money and bought that bike last May.  And we moved in October.  So he only had it for 1 summer.  It was his first multi-speed bike.  (21!)  So now he has his old bike.  Well, a reasonable facsimile anyway.   He rode last night until we made him come in and go to bed.  It is hard to bring them inside at bedtime now, since the sun doesn't go down until 11 PM!

This morning the crew woke up sick.  C had been struggling with some asthma issues all weekend, but he was reallly bad this morning. And S now has a sore throat and deep chest cough.  No horse lessons for us this morning.  :(

I guess that is all in our neck of the woods.  (or city, as the case may be...)  It was a heavenly weekend and I've learned to appreciate my city a little more.  And now we are back to the grind.
