Our Little Slice of Heaven

Blessings on the mountain

Some friends from church invited us over tonight for a BBQ.  I've been itching to get to their house because of all I'd heard.  They bought land up on a mountainside and built their own cabin.  I've heard it described as "tiny" and "very small" and I've heard A mention a ladder to the second story.  I was intrigued.

All the way up the mountain we were amazed at the beauty around us.  As we turned off the main road there was a sign declaring that this was a restricted road.  Snow chains are required in the winter and vehicles must be driven at the driver's own risk.  Whoa.  So we kept on plugging.  Got turned around a time or two, but didn't regret it because we saw even more gorgeous sights.

We finally pulled into their driveway and my first thought was "Wow.  They weren't kidding."  The cabin looked teensy.  But ya know what?  When we went inside, I was amazed.  There *is* a wood ladder/staircase built in to access the 2nd story.  It is very "Little House on the Prairie-like"  But ya know what else?  Up there were 2 tiny bedrooms and an office.  It was amazing!  And downstairs was the living area, kitchen, and bathroom.  The bathroom was very small, I'm told, but I didn't use it.  The kitchen was actually surprisingly large.  It is larger than mine, in fact.  The washer and dryer were under the kitchen counter.  They had a storage bench build against one wall and under the staircase/ladder were storage shelves, too.  Every nook and cranny was used for storage.  I was completely smitten by this cabin.   I couldn't believe it when they said it was only 16x16.  This is a family of 4.  In a 16x16 cabin.  True, their children are young.  C1 is 5 or 6 and C2 isn't quite 2, I don't think.  But still. 16x16!  And it still seems so open.  I loved the cabin.

I also fell in love with the mountain.  The views were breathtaking.  The woods were peaceful.  There were neighbors nearby, but not noticable.  I actually didn't realize they were there until shortly before we left.  My crew played long and hard, running through the woods, up and down the driveway, around and around the cabin.  They had a ball.

A keeps telling me they payed rock bottom prices when they bought their land 2 or 3 years ago, but if we want to grab some up, we need to get on the stick because the prices are climbing.  There are no restrictions, no covenants, nothing.  I could have goats, chickens, horses, anything I want.

Ah, to be able to afford it.  They seem so detached from the city, but ya know what?  It only took us about 20-25 minutes to get home, and we are on the total opposite side of the city from them.   Could our Little Slice of Heaven be up on the mountain??

That sounds glorious to me. I tell DH all the time all I need is a Little House on the Prairie size house.

That's really neat to see how those folks are making that amount of space work for them. I guess if ever there was a time for you all to do something like that, now would be the time since you all got rid of so much of your stuff when you moved to Alaska anyway. Most of us just have too much *stuff*. Even with 1600 sq feet, I'm trying to figure out if we can build on or something. Bookshelves, I need more bookshelves!!
