Our Little Slice of Heaven

Day 1 at the Homestead

Today we spent the afternoon out at Our Little Slice of Heaven.

Our main goal was to find the corner markers.  Unfortunately, we could only find 1.  The guy we bought it from suggested we take a metal detector out there.  I guess we're going to have to.  Noone has even touched that land in over 5 years, so they are pretty well lost in the undergrowth.  And quite alot there is, too!  S kept saying it was like a rainforest.   I don't think he was far from the truth!

So we started at the one corner marker we could find and began clearing the smaller trees near the road.  To be honest, we aren't completely sure where to even begin at this point.  This is completely raw land.  Where to begin, where to begin??

We had quite a milestone today. S cut down his first tree!  And he did it the old fashioned way...with an axe.  It was a very small tree, of course.  But it was still hard work.  Here is a pic of the newest lumberjack in town.  The perspective is a bit odd in this pic, he was cutting down the smaller tree in front...the one with 3 limbs.  The larger one is actually back a bit.

Here he is with his trophy tree, after he had already cut most of it off.

Hard working men...

Here's a shot of the inside of the lot.  Check out all that undergrowth!

We have our work cut out for us!!

What a beautiful piece of land! :) You have your work cut out for you, but what a wonderful place to homestead!

Nothing like working together at creating your niche, to bring together everyone in a spirit of cooperation. Soon you'll have enough cleared to be able to have a picnic together too :D

We actually began freezing our first bags of corn last night too. It took us a few years, but we finally got enough to eat some fresh AND to freeze some!

Does look like a lot of work - but I'm sure you'll have lots of fun in the process. That is truly homesteading from the start. Good luck.
