Had a Wonderful Weekend!
Posted on Monday, June 29, 2009 at 06:47
We had the most wonderful relaxing weekend with my niece and nephew.....they had a great time! We stayed home the whole weekend well almost:) Sunday was so nice that we ate out along the river:)
We usually stay very busy all weekend but I think we are going to start resting on Sundays...maybe visit family or friends? We usually don't even enjoy our weekends because we try to get to many things done that really don't need to be done on Sunday.
I am so glad that we finished our coop but I do believe it will be the last big thing we are going to do for a while. I want to enjoy the rest of the summer enjoying the chickens, swimming with the girls, having cook-outs, bon-fires and ect....
My husband will start his new hours tomorrow...he will go in at 7:00 and get home by 3:30 this will be such a big change for us! He has always worked from 8:30- 6:30 or longer. It will nice for him to get home earlier and get everything done during the week and then rest a bit on the weekend:)
Our garden is growing ....I weeded the tomatoes today:) We had a green pepper and a couple tomatoes with our dinner. There is always a lot to do but if we did a little everyday it will get done.
I am hoping to order the girls school books this week. I will get to use my older daughters books this year... that will help us save a little money. I am already getting excited about the new school year:)
Many Blessings,
Ma/ Renee

Another busy day...
Posted on Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 04:44
Right now the girls are getting ready.... when my husband gets home we are going to go out to eat for his birthday. I got many things done today...5 loads of laundry it really piled up from the weekend. I weeded two garden beds and watched the chickens:) I could have spent all morning out there but it just got to hot. It was near 90 at 10:00 Yuck but...... no rain and that makes me happy!
We haven't had anything sweet in a while and I didn't have a cake mix so I made my husband some birthday cookies:) I hope he enjoys them:)
I am still pretty tired from the weekend but I love looking out to see those happy hens! It makes me so happy to see something we have been planning for such a long time actually get done! We are so blessed! I am also glad that we didn't doubt ourselves...we had and still have no idea of what we are doing. We have read many books and blogs but when you are actually building something it is a little different and when I am looking at the chickens in the coop that we built it is very overwhelming! I knew that it was possiable but I kept asking when??? I know that God has the best timing and I am so grateful!
Many Blessings,
Ma/ Renee

Chicken coop is finished!!!!!
Posted on Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at 10:10
It is a very quiet morning at my house today...we finally finished the chicken coop this weekend. As I look out my back door I can see some very happy chickens! My husband and I worked all weekend and yesterday finishing up the chicken coop and it was well worth it. I am hoping to put on some pictures today of what it looks like along with some other fun pictures so stay tuned!
We are all a little tired from such a busy weekend...my youngest is on the back computer and my oldest is still a sleep. They didn't get to help a lot with the coop because we didn't have a realy plan of what we were doing but they played in the pool and kept thermselves very busy while we worked:) I am so grateful that they understand why we wanted the chicken coop and why it took so long. I have Wonderful daughters!!
So today will be a lazy day....I say that but I am sure we will find many things to do:) I have a lot I would like to get done out side but it is going get up to almost 90 today. It was a beautiful morning this morning...It is very warm the sun is shining and everything looks so pretty. I am so grateful that it has quit raining:)
My niece and nephew are coming over this weekend to spend the night with the girls...that should be a lot of fun. I can't wait for them to see our chickens:) I am sure we will spend the whole weekend outside with them swimming and just having fun!
We still have a lot to do in the garden the ground hog has eaten many of our tomato plants. We still need to plant some greenbeans. ...and there is always lots of weeding to do:) I think next year we are going to take a break from building anything and just work on the garden beds. We would like to get our hutches built for the rabbits but we might have to wait for the following year. We already have the wire cages and the feeders and waters so I know hutches would be easy to build.....maybe I am to tired to think about getting all that done:)
I hope you enjoy your day and stay tune for our pictures.....
Blessings to you,
Ma/ Renee

Another Day of Rain?
Posted on Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at 10:27
It is suppose rain today and most of the week and weekend. I have been working in the garden everyday the last few weeks and it is looking a lot better. I could say it is just about weed-free Yeah! It seems like the more rain that we get the more weeds that we have:) We still haven't planted our corn and we only have a few greenbeans planted. I hope that we are able to get them planted in the next few days? We saw our big fat ground-hog last night..my husband thinks he is after our sweet potatoes we just saw him eating clover:) I guess we will have to keep an eye on the sweet potatoes until we can get rid of him. We have a have-a-heart trap that we could catch him in and then take him to my mom's a few miles down the road....she has a few more acre's then what we have....I think he will have all the clover he wants there:)
This week is not too busy...tomorrow we are going to a baseball game. We haven't been to a game in a long time so it should be fun if it doesn't rain. On Friday the girls and I have a birthday party to go to....a family at our church is from Kenya and their daughter is having her 16th birthday so that should be fun too:) We are hoping to work on our chicken coop again this weekend...we are pretty sure one of the chickens we kept is not a hen but a rooster so we will have to trade him for a hen with my mom:) It's fun to hear him try to crow poor thing:)
It is a very gloomy day today I have been outside this morning checking over the garden and weeding a little bit. I also planted a rose bush that my brother gave us a few weeks ago. I am almost done with laundry and the dishes need put away. My daughters are up and busy with their day. We have been trying to wake before 7:00 each morning which is great when there are many things to get done but makes a long day when the weather is yucky....so I am not sure what I will do the rest of the day. Yesterday I spent about a hour reading a good book I started and I crochet some last night. I am working on a light blanket...it might take me a while to finsh it:)
Many Blessing to all,
Ma/ Renee

Rain again?
Posted on Friday, June 12, 2009 at 11:39
Well we thought today was suppose to be a dry day....my husband has stayed home from work to work on our chicken coop. It has rained most of the morning:( although it is not raining now:) My husband just left to get a few more boards from the hardware store we have in our town. We really haven't bought anything but screws so far so that has been a blessing. He also had to stop by the bank and the post office. We get to pay off my hospital bill today $450.00 this will be a load off my mind. I hate having extra bills! We also have to pay our car taxes $92.00 which isn't bad because we have older cars. We are still looking to buy a used "newer" car before winter. I hate having a car payment again but we really need something more dependable.
We have a busy weekend... we are going to see my nephew play T-ball tomorrow morning and then we are having my husbands birthday and my brothers girlfriends birthday and an early Father's day celebration...Wow! My youngest daughter Sarah is getting baptized on Sunday morning. So we will be ready to have a rest day Sunday afternoon:)
I can't believe how much rain we are getting....I heard that we are suppose to have a really cool and wet summer in Kentucky....and then we are suppose to have a extra cold and wet winter. Yuck! We are now thinking if we should be looking into another way to heat our home this winter? Everything costs so much money! I would love to get a woodburning stove but I am not sure what kind of chimney you have to have? I have seen families do this theirselves:)
Our gardening is growing great! I spent many dry mornings weeding and picking bugs of our potatoe plants. We are hoping to get tomatoes next month?
Many Blessings to all,
Renee

Busy Day
Posted on Monday, June 1, 2009 at 05:46
Well I woke up early with many things to do before it got to hot. (88) I had to pull all the weeds in front our home..it was a weedy mess:) I then went out to the garden and the Colorado Potato Beetle has attacked our potatoes in a big way so I went and hand-picked all the pests. I actually picked two bowls full of beetles Yuck! I then had to drown them it was a Yucky mess! I am going back out this evening to see if there are many left on the potatoes. We hate using chemicals but if we can't keep up with them we might have to do something.
My daughter's are going to their cousins for a few days. They have been packing and getting ready for that:) I will miss them:(
My husband is having some men over Saturday from church for a men's breakfast so while the girls are gone I will try to get the house is some kind of order:) I haven't really deeped cleaned since Christmas. I did wipe the kitchen walls down on Friday I might do that with the rest of the house...well maybe:)
I have been working on my crocheting a bit. I found a really neat crocheting book at the library... I can't wait to look at:)
Well... I have porkchops, baked potatoes and corn on the cob for dinner...Yum!! I just wish I had a fresh tomato!
Blessings to all,
Renee/Ma

A Beautiful Day.....
Posted on Friday, May 29, 2009 at 11:40
Today is a beautiful day...I am going to get a our yard mowed. We are hoping to get the chicken coop built this weekend:) We are also hoping it doesn't rain! We still have many things still left to plant in the garden...our greenhouse has been wonderful!
I got my hospital bill this week...I went in last month finding out that I had a bladder infection and the kidney stone. So far we have to pay a little over $500.00. We also have to buy our daughters school books which will be around $ 300.00. Yikes! We rented a car for camping trip that costed $150.00. I hate having bills that sneak up on you!
I am also working on our grocery budget again...I spend so much at the store. We are averaging $200.00 a week. I am going to write out a master list and try not to stray from it!! I do have a little stockpiled for this week ...my husband is going to pick a few things tonight to get us through next week.

We had a wonderful weekend...Friday we left to go camping with two families from our church. We came home Saturday night late....woke up late and then went to my brothers to see my niece and nephew in a play. Yesterday it rained all day so we stayed home and rested..we watched a movie together it was so nice!
Today: My husband went to work and right now I am searching a few things on the internet. We still don't have our chicken coop ready so we will have to work on it this weekend if it doesn't rain....our friends from church are having a picnic which we would love to go to but we really need to get the coop built. My dad came today to get his chickens so we have 6 chickens waiting for their new home.....we have to get it done!!!
I have a few things I'd like to get done today...write out our bills, clean out our guinea pig cages, I want to get our laundry room cleaned out. I am hoping to paint it next week? I am also reading a great book that I would like to finish...and a dish towel that I have been crocheting...always something to do. It is so nice to just rest from doing school. I also need to order the girls books this week.
I am really trying hard to rest this summer...not worry about what gets done. The last few years I would write up a big to do list and hope we get everything done by the end of summer.
I now have a what not to do list....
1. sleep in....I want to wake up early each morning
2. Stay busy... I want to sit down and watch or listen to my daughters...it can get done later.
3. Buy our fun....you can have fun just being together we camped for $20.00 (for the camp sight)
4. eating out....eat more at home it is healthier!
5. Stay on the internet all day Nope! although it is fun!
There is a few.... what is on your not to do list this summer?

Our Last Day of School!
Posted on Friday, May 15, 2009 at 08:11
Aaah, Summer the time of swimming, walking on the cool grass with your barefeet, shorts (long shorts for me), t-shirts,flipflops, playing volleyball and badmitton outside, gardening, eating tomatoes and other garden veggies, having wet hair and not having to dry it ;), taking pictures of God's beautiful creation, sunny days as well as rainy ones, warm weather, typing about my summer days on this blog, writing stories and letters to friends in the air-conditioned house or at the table on the deck outside, and most of all being with my family either on a vacation, gardening outside with them, picking vegetables , or inside trying to cool off with them. :)
Yay for Summer Break! :)
Today was my last day of school, being a 9th grader! I have had a great 9th grade school-year and I feel as if I have learned a lot! My sister Laura and I are still going to do Bible, Math, and reading a book of our choice, in the Summer, but we get 3 weeks off before that. (I want to try to read my Bible in the Summer, though.)
I am so happy about Summer break, and I can't wait to do all of the things that I mentioned above. :D
When do you all get off for Summer Break?

Summer and my Porch swing.......
Posted on Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at 10:14
We have been so very busy the last few weeks... that I am hoping soon we will be able to sit back enjoy some nice warm weather. This is our last week of school:) We do a little school during the summer but not much:)
I have a few things I would like to get done during our summer break...1. I would like to get our laundry room painted. I have never painted our laundry room so... I thought adding a coat of paint might make it more enjoyable doing that never ending job:) 2. I would also like to paint our kitchen cabinets. We have thought about doing this for a while now but I never can find the color I like...I am still looking for a soft yellow or a cream?
We have tilled up many garden beds..I love the smell of fresh soil being turned over by the tiller. We are going to try to grow our beans and corn in rows this year. We have always used squared beds so I am interested to see if this will work for us.
The chickens will be in their new home soon...hopefully this weekend we will work on the coop. The chickens have gotten so big..it has been fun watching them grow:)
It is suppose to rain the rest of the week and then be nice for the weekend. Yesterday was beautiful..... I sat on our deck for a while and I just looked at how the Lord has blessed us....we have thought about moving the last few years and we really can see that the Lord has placed us where we belong:) I can't believe we have been in our home for 10 years. I start thinking of all the times I have doubted God about the home we are now in always wanting more....a bigger yard or more land....more space for me and the girls. I would be up-set because I didn't think we could ever have any animals and we are now going to have chickens:) Why do we ever doubt??
My favorite summer moments are just hanging out with my family....I love spending afternoons in our porch swing sometimes reading a good book or just talking to my daughters. The best convesations are done on the porch swing. There are mornings that I get up real early to just sit and watch the birds and thank God for that new day. I also enjoy those evening when my husband gets home and we stay out there into dark talking about our future plans. I Love those talks!!!
I guess you can tell I can't wait until summer...
Many Blessing,
Ma/ Renee

I still need to buy our school books for next year.
We still have a few garden beds to make...(we have been having too much rain)
We still want to call the man about getting some rabbits...( we would like to have hutches built first)
We are praying for God's guidance on getting a "newer" car.
I guess that might sound boring to some...I am so glad that I am up and about again. I was on the couch for about two weeks so I am now ready to make my to do list for the summer:)
To do list...for the Summer
My oldest daughter would like to get her room painted.
I would like to paint my kitchen cabinets.
I would like to get our laundry room cleaned and painted.

Prayer Request....Kidney stone
Posted on Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at 11:20
Hello! We have friends and family that read this blog and I wanted to ask for prayer.... I/Renee went to the doctor yesterday because I haven't been feeling very well the last few weeks. Well my doctor thinks I passed a kidney stone on Sunday night...... I am going in for an ultra-sound on my ovaries to look for cystis on Wednesday. I am still having pain on my right side which could be from the kidney stone? So please keep me in prayer.
There has been so much happening here....we have 17 little baby chicks in our garage waiting for a new home. We are working on their coop..... we are also still looking at getting rabbits. I would love to hear about other peoples experiences with rabbits:)
My husband has added a few more garden beds and we have our greenhouse exhaust fan in:) We have been putting our garden plants in the greenhouse to harden them off ....it has been wonderful! We are going to plant a few things in the greenhouse to see how they will grow? We did plant some tomatoes, potatoes, and onions so far out in the garden beds....... I am so glad spring is Here!!
Happy Gardening!!

Learning about raising chickens!
Posted on Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at 04:23
Wow, it has been a long time since I've written here but I wanted to share that our new adventure in raising chickens has officially begun! We finally have baby chicks!
I know this isn't a big deal to most of you but we have never kept any kind of farm animal before. We have been gardening for over 20 years now however and It seems that raising chickens is a natural extension to vegetable gardening. I've seen many other garden blogs discuss chickens and a whole lot of homestead bloggers have vegetable gardens and chickens. I suppose it is similar in that just like with vegetable plants, you care for the chickens and then "harvest" the eggs.
Our chicken coop will be located right in front of the garden and next to the greenhouse, so they will actually become part of the garden. We will be able watch them and tend to them while in the garden and it will be easy to supplement their diet with veggies and insects from the garden. I am looking forward to having them as my garden companions.
For now, they are in our garage in the homemade brooder that my father-in-law built:
We have 17 chicks in all but there are 5 breeds represented. Among them are Buff Orpington, Silver Laced Wyondotte, Dominiques, Black Austrolorp, and some Polish Crested. I don't know how many we will be keeping. Some of them will join the flock that Renee's parents have. For now we are enjoying them all and watching them change and grow daily in the brooder.
Since we really don't know what we're doing yet, we have been reading a lot about raising chickens. Whenever I start something new, I like to find the great books on the subject. I go to several libraries and check out as many books as I can on the subject - usually twenty books or more. Then we browse through each book and pick out our favorites. Then I read those books in their entirety and usually buy two or three of them for future reference. To begin our chicken adventure, I found many books and have selected these four as my favorites:
The book that most people would recommend is Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens . I agree that it is a wealth of information and I will be buying it.
Another great book for me right now is Chicken Coops: 45 Building Plans for Housing Your Flock since I still have to build our coop. It has lots of great ideas.
My third selection is Keeping Chickens: The Essential Guide because it has good information and beautiful pictures of the chickens and different coop ideas. This is helpful to our family because we are not yet familiar with even how our adult chickens will look.
Last but not least, I am enjoying Barnyard in Your Backyard . It is great because it is written as a guide for beginners. It also covers raising other small animals including rabbits. Rabbits will be our next addition, so I will be buying this book as well.
I love the combination of learning by doing at the same time you learn what to do from books. We will be learning how to raise chickens successfully in this way and we are pretty excited. Hopefully I will have the coop and yard built soon to show you.
Until then, I will be reading more about chickens from these books and from many of your great Homestead Blogger Blogs!
Many Blessings!

Trying to stay on budget.....
Posted on Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at 10:52
It has been very pretty these last few days:) I had time yesterday to work in the yard and it felt great getting things ready for spring. I am hoping that we don't get any frost in the next few weeks all of are fruit trees are ready to bloom.
I am getting excited about the gardening season...we have a few little plants under grow lights growing and getting big. I can't wait until my husband can put them in the garden beds...well they will be set in the greenhouse to harden off first. That will be really neat to use our greenhouse for the very first time:)
I have been looking at our budget and I can see that things are not getting any cheaper so.... our budget is telling us that we will have to try to save even through the summer monthes. It is so hard not to want to take a small vacation or to spend a little extra on fun things.
Proverbs 6 :6-9
Go to the ant, you sluggard!
Consider her ways and be wise.
Which, having no captain,
Overseer or ruler,
Provides her supplies in the summer,
And gathers her food in the harvest.
How long will you slumber, O sluggard?
When will you rise from you sleep?
I don't want to be a sluggard....I want to a rise and know that there is a time to spend and a time to save. It will be hard not to over spend when the weather warms up but we are going to try to stay on a budget.
We will be looking for a newer car the next few monthes. My husbands car is not working...so he is using my car. We will be praying for God's guidence on this area. We also have a few outside jobs that will need to get done. We will be praying that we use our money wisely because it really isn't our money it is Gods money!
Many Blessings,
~Ma/Renee

Too much thinking.....
Posted on Tuesday, February 24, 2009 at 10:19
It has been a while since I have wrote what we have been up to.....so I thought this would be the day:)
The weather has been warming up slightly so thinking about spring is in the air. This past weekend we stay home and my husband worked on another cold frame we are going to use in our hoop/greenhouse. It is fun thinking about that cold frame filled with little baby plants. (www.gardendesk.com) to see a picture of it.
My daughters are staying busy doing school work and their hobbies. They were talking this weekend about how could kids ever say they are bored....they are Never bored there is always something to do in this home:)
I have been doing way to much thinking so I guess you can tell I haven't been working on my stitching much.....I did buy a beautiful table topper to stitch. I have worked on it a little bit but there is so much to do before I can finish it. When I work on it I don't have my mind running so much:)
I have been thinking about what I wish I had .......I know bad thoughts! I should be content! I really don't need anything but the flesh is always wanting more? We will pay off my daughters braces hopefully next month. That has been a very big goal for us. Then we will have no debt but the house......that is when I start thinking about what others have and they are in debt it is the american way.....but not our way? I don't ever want to have debt...but I know so many others that have many things that are in debt and they are fine right? No! So I guess you can see my mind is kind of crazy!!
I was reading a book and this jump out at me "would we only be happy if God took away something or gave us something?" Shouldn't we be happy be only in Him? I want to be!!
Dear Lord Jesus,
Quiet this restless heart...remind me all I need is You! I need nothing else or no one else but you! You are Wonderful and you give me what I need. You are incomplete control....and I never need to worry about anything! Stay close to me and show me where I need to learn and grow. In Jesus name amen!
Thank you for sharing a few minutes of your day with me:)
Many Blessings,
Ma/ Renee

Throwing away 12% of your groceries?????
Posted on Friday, February 13, 2009 at 04:27
We had a quiet day today...We finished up school early and watched a movie..Anne of Greengables such a cute movie the girls loved it!! I cleaned the house and I put a bananna bread in the oven. I was reading this months Reader Digest and it had two ideas about groceries
1. The more products you see the more you you are likely to buy.
2. You will end up throwing away 12% of what you buy.
Well the first one I believe because I try to not look around to much at the store and I often buy the store brand ....because it is usually cheaper.
The second one I am having a hard time with....we spend so much at the store and the idea that I am throwing 12% (which is a lot to me )away....well this worries me a little. My husband works very hard at his job and it seems very wasteful to throw his money in the garbage. I am going to see how much we actually throw away this month??
The weather has been so nice that I have been getting the needle work bug. I think I might begin working on some pillowcases for spring:) I hate that I am getting spring fever so early....I just know it will snow again:(
We are going to order are worm-bin this weekend as my Valentines gift:) It is a big one that we will keep in the kitchen to put our garden wastes in. I have been wanting one for a while and we finally found one that is not to expensive. I can't wait to take a picture of it:)
Many Blessings,
~Ma/ Renee

Kangen water??
Posted on Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at 03:40
We have some really dear friends that have been drinking Kangen water. I don't know much about this water....so I am here to ask my wonderful friends here at Homesteadblogger. They are not trying to sell us the water they will give it to us for free as often as we want so why drink Kangen and not just regular water?
Any advice would help....
Blessings,

Children a blessing or a burden??
Posted on Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at 10:02
Yesterday was a beautiful day! We spent 2 hours out-side working in the yard and garden. I try not to get spring fever to early but with day like that it is hard not to:) Today is rainy and 65! It was great cleaning up the garden beds and picking up many sticks it was good to get somethings done.
We would like to get a lot of things done in the yard this year but with money being so tight I doubt that we will be able. I know money has been tight for everyone....it is hard not going into debt to just to get a project done...so no money no project. The only debt we have right now is our house payment and our daughters braces we are going to pay-off the braces in a few monthes (Yeah!!!) We have managed to get our daily bills to be very low. We have cut back so much...we just need to work on our grocery budget and eating out when we are out. That is the hard one as long as we stay home we are fine!
I have been reading so many articles on how many children a couple should have...now we only have 2 children and I see many children as a blessing....but I have been reading so many articles calling children a burden? I am afraid that we will be like China only allowed 1 child per family?? I have a favorite homesteading magazine that put this as second as the problem the goverment is facing with money issues? I don't understand it?? I also saw a article saying it is "green" to have only one child??? It is frightening what the goverment is trying to sneak in??
Have you read any thing about this??
Blessings,
Ma/ Renee
