Little French Homestead

• Friday 10 March 2006 - About homeschooling

Posted in general

I discovered homeschooling while reading blogs from american mothers.

I had never heard about it before, I think homeschooling simply doesn’t exist in France.

In France we have a very strong and organized welfare state, that’s include completely free educational system from the age of 3 to college ( which is almost free too…), and a lot of financial incentive to keep mothers in the work force .

My husband and I have choosen a private christian school for our 3 children; even if the public system is pretty good, we didn’t wanted our children to suffer the “laicity brainwashing”.

Well, I come back to homeschooling… My 8yods had a very bad accident during the winter vacation, when we were skiing in the Alps, he fall from a chair-lift and he broke both legs and arms (this happen on 2/11)

Thanks to the Lord, all the injuries will be fixed by the end of march, but he can’t go to school and I have to home school him.

It’s amazing for me to discover how wonderful it is. His teatcher give me homework, I complete it with my son in about 1 ½ hour/day. She comes to our home each Wednesday and check this homework with him. I have really discover that one on one teaching is efficient, at the present time my children spend 6 hours/day in school doing what can be completed in 11/2 hour !

As a matter of fact, I will have to go back to work in april, and my son will go back to school, but I’d experiment something very enriching…

I can say that I admire a lot homeschooling mothers for the great job they do

Your poor son!! I pray he heals quickly.

I found some information about homeschooling in France on the HSLDA site. There are homeschoolers in France but it is very regulated. Here is the link if you want to read it:

Hi. We are the same in Australia. Most people haven't heard of homeschooling, but I found out that alot of people do it here. And in my State it is actually very easy to be able to do it. It prompted me to get a couple of homeschool books in handwriting. I must do a bit more with the girls.

I am glad you enjoyed it.

Hope your son feels better soon.

How fun to read about France!! I have always wanted to visit, and now can learn through you. What a blessing that will be. I am looking forward to getting my bread machine unpacked to make your yummy recipe. We recently moved to the country and much of our stuff is still packed. Your English is fantastic!!!
