Little Bitty Homestead Updates...

Posted in Just another day on the homestead

I've gotten all of my Christmas shopping done! So that is a relief.  I still have a few things to wrap.  A friend of mine gave me a huge roll of white paper on a roll so we've been making our own wrapping paper.  We roll out what we can, paint & glitter that then let it dry & then get to the wrapping.  -Sounds like a long process and it is, but it's been fun too.

I've been in some kind of dull-mood lately.  I've got pleanty to do, but just don't feel motivated to do any of it.  I have upped my vitamins & I'm feeling like I'm working out of it though.  I plan on cleaning well tomorrow & I've got a load of laundry in the dryer right now.  When it's done & folded I plan on getting some rest.

We have had our hog pen done for a little while now & I thought I share a couple of pictures.  If you saw the ones where we first got "Bacon Butt" you will see he's grown quite a bit.  The black one is called "Sally." She will not be headed for the slaughter house, however, BB will only be around until Feb or March. These pictures were taken about 2 weeks ago & in those couple of weeks they have really grown.

The black barrel is for water. It has a metal pipe with metal nipples coming out from it.  This way the pigs can always have pleanty of water without it getting dirty or us having to fill it up as often.

Side view. We had to make a roof due to we've had bobcats & other animals that might like our pigs.  The blue rope is there because we have it around a tall tree branch.  We pull it up & tie it off if we want to go in the pen.  However we really don't have to go in too much.  We can feed & water from the outside.

Since these pictures we had alot of rain.  It got very muddy back there.  So we got some free pallets.  Removed some of the boards & put them back together so there were barely any gaps.  We put a row of them in front of the house part but still mostly under the roof.  Then we've been raking leaves & putting them in the dirt part.  This has helped with the mud alot.

Inside the house they love to bed in the hay.  We're think they should stay pretty warm.  They cuddle up with each other - It's really cute.

We are clearing out some of the woods around them in hopes to be able to plant another garden back there.  Probably corn & maybe pumpkins.  We need to get it cleared to let the sunlight in.  My hubby & son have gotten started on this.  Their goal is to cut down & pile up 10 trees a day.  Hubby is off for the next 2 weeks so they have some time.  However, even though the weather was 75* here today it's calling for winter weather, even sleet/snow starting on Monday.  So we may all wind up by the fire all week!

Looking into raising some pigs of your own?  We have read & recommend the following books.

Tomorrow hubby is going to go get some wood to begin on the hen house part of our new coop.  We are ready to put the chicken wire on the outdoor part, but we're waiting on his cousin to come over to cut some limbs out of a big tree that is hanging over it.  After that we'll be ok to continue.  I really do want to get it done because the weather will be getting bad before too long.  Plus, I'm really tired of chicken doo-doo every where! -Yuck-

Well, the dryer is almost done.  Waiting to load pictures on dial-up takes forever!

~Good night~
