What do you get with 1/2 galvanized bucket full of engilsh peas?

Posted in Just another day on the homestead

For us it was a measly 2 1/2 pints.  We experimented this year and planted 2 small rows of english peas & 2 small rows of sugar snaps.  The sugar snaps were about equal in the amount we picked yesterday.  I have to say that for all the garden space & shelling it will be a vegetable that I'll pay for in the store or a farm stand anytime.    I like to grow new things, but for 50cents or less per can I'll be buying peas from now on.

In the garden at the moment we have about 40 cucumber plants,  46 tomato plants, 4 squash, 4 zucchini, 4 rows of corn, and about 30 assorted pepper plants.  It is looking good so far!

Today has been a tiring one.  Children everywhere & right now my 2 children & another niece & nephew are in the pool splashing away.  I'm taking advantage of this time & I'm sitting here while the pot of beans simmer on the stove & the laundry is in the dryer. --Yes I said dryer.  It would have been a great day to line dry, but I just didn't get around to that today.  I did get ALL the laundry done up & the little bit of peas canned though.

When the kids are done swimming we'll have supper & then I'll mop the floor.  Then I'm done for the day!  Survivor is on tonight & then we'll all play a game of scrabble & bed!

Honey do list...

Posted in Just another day on the homestead

O.K., I don't actually write out a list, but I have had several things that have needed done around the homestead & hubby has put them off for some time.  Well, yesterday while Abigail & I were gone to the used book sale hubby & son stayed home & finally got some of them done!

So, no more big hole in the wall between the bathroom & my room (an unfinished part from when we had to tear out the floor & such due to a leak)

No more hole in the linoleum in the kitchen.

Got the cover off the swimming pool and began cleaning.

He was working on the dishwasher when I came home!  Except, he thinks it needs a new pump so we'll have to order that.  But at least he did try!!!

Abby & I went to the annual used homeschool book sale.  I have not been in the past 2 years because that is also the same weekend as the kids field trial at the beagle club.  They all decided they did not want to go this year, so yippee!

I was on the hunt for LLATL yellow & gray and did not find them, but I did find several other usefull books for each of us & a couple of movies.  I got one set of Indiana Jones (3 movies) that I can't wait to watch with the kids.  --Somehow they have not ever seen them & I remember liking them as a teenager & so did my husband.

We later all went to the pool store to get some patches, a spring & a buket of chlorine tabs...totalling...about $82.00 (whew!)

Then we got enough tomoto plants to finish out the row in the garden.  6 Big boys & 1 golden.  Our garden is all planted now, but here is a picture of Tyler tilling it up a couple of weeks ago.

The men went fishing this morning & it's all quiet around here at the moment. ahh...
Here is a pic of a happy fisherman from 2 weeks ago.
I hope you all enjoy your Sunday.

My Monday...

Posted in Just another day on the homestead

My Monday started out getting up early & waking the kiddos.  We went to clean the woman's house.  She had a doctor's appointment so we finished up early & made a quick trip to wal-mart.  (I needed to get a new toilet seat for my bathroom) also a new towel rack for my bathroom.  I got what we needed & then right around there was a clearance shelf.  I saw 3 gallons of Thompsons water sealer + tint for $10 each in the same color we needed.  So called hubby & he said "Buy it"  Re-staining our porches was on my list of projects to do this summer so this was GREAT!

When we got home we had lunch & I cleaned up.  --I still need to put the toilet seat on & rack up, but I'm letting the kitchen floor dry first.  That means I can sit at the computer & wait!

As far as the babysitting goes, I have decided to talk to my sister tonight.  I think things will all work out ok.

After I'm done with my work I plan on reading some.  I have a book from the library called "In a Shaker Kitchen"  I'm really enjoying it.  It is a recipe book with some pretty pictures & a bit of Shaker history.

Another one is one a dear friend of mine picked up for me.  "The Yankee Magazine Book of Forgotten Arts"  -LOADS of information about all aspects of homesteading.  --REALLY neat book!

Here's our weekly menu:

Mon- Hamburgers, salad

Tues- Chicken, stuffing, green beans, gravy

Wed- Stir-fry & rice

Thurs- Tater-tot casserole, mixed veggies

Fri- Red beans & rice, cornbread

Saturday around the little bitty homestead...

Posted in Just another day on the homestead

Well, today the "men" got up to go fishing with Grandpa.  I got up, made the bed & coffee.  Abigail is sound asleep & I sit here in a quiet house except for my typing.  --These are the mornings I really enjoy!  It's cloudy & a bit foggy out. --I like that look too early in the morn.

We had a great few days with my mom.  She went home yesterday & made it safely, praise God.  She has made the drive a few times alone, & is a good driver, but I always worry being a woman alone stopping & such.   She is much braver than I am in that reguard.

We did still get school done (minus one day to run around and shop with mom)  Our read aloud this time is a fun book.  Charlotte's Web.  We have all seen the movie, but none of us have ever read the book.  --It is a really cute story.

We're trying to bring our school year to an end, but unfortunately we still have a bit to do.  Abby has about 2 months more & Tyler about the same to finish their work.  They are NOT AT ALL  happy about this.  We've had a pretty good year, but we've taken some days off here & there and I figured we'd just double up here and there but then the babysitting came in.

Keeping my sisters children the past 3 1/2 months has been a blessing in a way but it's also put us quite behind in our schoolwork & our daily household duties.  I have gotten SO FAR off of my schedule & I must admit MY children have taken advantage of it too.   The babysitting was suppose to be for 3 months & my sister avoids any conversation about it.  So, come Monday morning I've just got to have a conversation with her and just let her know what I can & can't do.

I want to help in anyway I can & I LOVE those two kids, but my helping out for a short time has really passed.  It's could watch them sometimes, or even 1 day a week, but that's it.  We have other things we do and I just hope she can understand that.  BECAUSE, I know my sister.  No matter how nice/sweet/loving I want to be, she will probably not hear it.  She will probably get mad & not talk to me or let me see them for a while. ------I pray I'm wrong!!!

Well, enough about that!!!

We got our garden in this past weekend.  Here's what we're growing:

Big beef tomatoes

Bradley tomatoes (pink)

Arkansas travler tomatoes

Green bell pepper

Sweet banana pepper

Jalapeno pepper

Italian cherry pepper

Cucumbers

Yellow sweet corn

Zucchini squash

Straight neck yellow squash

Our peas have taken off & I should be able to pick some of the sugarsnaps in the next few days.

I hope you all have a great weekend & I plan on having one too!
