Thinking about the garden...

Happy New Year everybody!

I've been thinking about gardening today.  Yes, it's true that last year's garden was taken over by weeds, but I have high hopes for this year!  Oh, and just because the weeds were taller than the plants last year...the garden still produced well!

I sat down and made a list of the things I'd like to plant this year.  I am also going to make a list of how much of each item I'd like to have in storage, to last us for a year (or thereabouts).

Here is my list of things to plant...so far:

  • tomatoes
  • green bell peppers
  • hot peppers, jalapeno probably
  • sweet corn
  • pickles
  • summer squash
  • winter squash
  • acorn squash
  • green beans/pole beans
  • potatoes
  • onions
  • turnips
  • kohlrabi
  • carrots
  • luttuce
  • cabbage
  • honeydew
  • cantaloupe
  • watermelon
  • pumpkin
  • sunflowers

I'd like to put in some fruit plants/bushes/trees as well:

  • Strawberries
  • red raspberries
  • blueberries (10 - 15 bushes?)
  • apples (3 or 4 trees)
  • peach  (3 or 4)
  • cherry  (3 or 4)

Of course, just because I have written it down, doesn't mean I'll actually get to plant it.  Money usually dictates having a smaller garden than I have in mind.  Which is probably a good thing, as I can NEVER keep up with the weeds.  I plan to show them who is boss this year though!  Really I do!

What is everybody else planting?  Looking forward to gardening as much as I am?

Hugs, Lisa

What a Dream Garden!

Your garden sounds like it would be wonderful. The size of my garden is dictated by budget also and summer plans (as you don't want a bumper crop while you are gone!) I am always good about taking care of my garden in the spring and fall. When it heats up during the dog days of summer I am hard pressed to motivate myself to go out there!
We are planning to plant smaller this year (did too much last year and couldn't keep up with it all!)
A couple varieties of heirloom tomatoes (not sure which ones- got any ideas?) and a couple new heirloom squash/pumpkins. As well as the usual green peppers, cucumbers, herbs and flowers. My DH wants to try strawberries too and is making plans to build a "cage" to protect them.
