A sad farewell...my much-loved rooster passed away yesterday...

He was a great rooster. We had him for more than 7 years. He was a 'gag' gift for our wedding in November of '99. He was the first animal on our 'homestead' and you could say he started it all.

He was fairly big as chickens go and had 3 inch spurs. He was the friendliest guy though. Well, not to other roosters, and occasionally our dog, but he loved us and never failed to meet us at our car when we returned home from someplace. He was always right there (looking for a handout I'm sure...LOL).

I could go outside and call his name and he never failed to come running. He'd often stand on the porch railing and crow 'good morning', or 'good afternoon', depending on the time of day.

He had a beautiful loud crow, but he has had 'laryingitis' for over a year and couldn't crow anymore. He'd still try though. He'd also still call the hens over for a bite to eat (they still came even though he didn't have much voice). He wouldn't eat unless they had all eaten first. Craziest thing I ever seen..he'd be hungry, but he would wait until they had their fill before he'd eat anything.

I'm so sad he's gone, he's been a part of our family since we started our family. He will be missed terribly and never forgotten.

I'm sure he's crowing to a little harem in heaven now.

A sad day for me, I miss him now, but it's going to be really hard in the warmer weather when he 'free ranged' and met us at the car all the time.

A better rooster we'll never find.

I loved that rooster.
