A girl appeared at our door this evening...

It was the strangest thing.  DH and I were cooking supper at about 6 this evening, and I hear a knock at the door.  Upon checking, it was a young girl...she's in sixth grade I found out later.  Now, it is 28 degrees out there...she has a flimsy elbow length shirt on, a pair of pants, and non-winter shoes.

She said she was sorry to bother me, but could she use a phone to call her mom.  She asked what town she was in?  I told her, and that is the same town she lives in (???).  She says she WALKED from the school to here.  Said she must have been having delusionsl (her exact words), as she didn't know where she was.  I told her XXth Street, and she said, oh, I thought it was XXth (our crossroad).  So she had SOME idea of where she was.  The street name anyway.

Now, why would she choose our driveway?  We sit further off the road than any house around here.  If she DID walk that far, there are many, many houses along the way that are closer to the road?

I do not think she walked from town.  It is way too far with no coat and 28 degree weather.  She looked cold, but not that cold.  I honestly think somebody dropped her off at the corner, or she jumped out...and then came up to call home.

The other idea is that she was with somebody checking to see if anybody was home.  That is a scary thought, and I'm hoping that is NOT true.

Her cuffs of her pants were muddy, but that could have happened just from walking up our drive...they were muddy up above the ankles...but they were dragging the ground anyway, so it wouldn't have taken much for them to get dirty I guess.

Upon her trying to call her mom on my cell, and getting somebody else (a sibling maybe), and talking with that person (I heard her ask if John Boy had his phone with him)...I concluded that mom must not have had her phone with her.  I told her I would just take her home.  She lives in town, about 4 or 5 miles away (that is how far she said she walked).

Anyway...I took her home, and got her name and her dad's name.  She had me drop her off on the road in front of her house.  I do believe that is where she lived, as she told me on the way there that it was an older house, a historical building and they live upstairs.  It matched that description.

I was a little sad about the whole deal.  She went with me so willingly.  I have never seen her before.  I hope she's ok.  I do think that she was somehow dropped off near here.  I do not understand how or why.

There is no way she walked 4 miles in this weather.  She'd have been near frozen if that had been true.  She was cold...but just not that cold.

I asked her about her coat, and she said she left it in her locker at school.

Just a sad situation.  How did she get here?  She was so vague about it all.  I'm writing down all I remember, just in case I ever need it for future use.

What a strange thing to have happen.

I did see a policeman clocking cars from a factory entrance on my way back home after dropping her off, and I thought about stopping and mentioning it...but I don't want to make more of it than I should.  I guess I just don't know what to think.

This is really just a ramble.

DD is heading to bed and DH and I are getting ready for the season finale of Surface.  We love that show and are sad that it's ending tonight.  We do think there will be another season, we just aren't sure when it'll start.  What a bummer if it doesn't start until fall.

Hope you all had a good day!

Hugs,
Lisa

I really think you should contact the authorities on this one, IMHO. It just does not sound right. Hope it gets resolved.

How strange! And to only be in the 6th grade, I would be careful, you never know these days.

That is strange!

I hope she is okay too. I would probably consider contacting someone too. It just didn't sound like something was right with her state of mind, and it is not safe for a young girl to be out walking miles alone. And if she didn't walk that far, it's still not a safe situation for her. Just doesn't sound right.
