I stopped by the feed store on Tuesday, that's the day they get their chick delivery, and I just had to buy some meat chicks. I had too. I really did. If I don't get them now, we'll have them while we are gone for vacation in August, and I want them in the freezer before that. So..I had to buy them. I only bought 20, but then I rethought it and I think I'll get more next week. I may try to do another batch of them after our vacation in August, as I really need to have 60 to put in our freezer to last us all year. I also have two different people that want 20 each. I can't sell any until our freezer is full though. I'm not sure yet how much it will cost me to raise them anyway, and it might not be worth selling any this year. We'll have to see. So our little injured chick is doing well learning to walk with one foot. I put her in with the rest of the chicks today, we'll see how she does. We put our turkey with the hurt wing out with the other chicks last night. I'm not sure how that will go, we may have to separate her again. Her wing is healed but it could easily be pecked open again. She was happy to get out and exercise. *Upon just checking on her, it's broke open again so I'll have to separate her again later tonight. We did have another injury and we separated that chick out into the now empty turkey cage. I'm not sure what happened to it. It's injured on the lower part of it's back. It doesn't look like a pecking injury so I'm just not sure. We'll keep it separated while it heals...it doesn't look too bad, so it shouldn't be long. I did have one more guinea die when we put them in the coop the other day. I think he got hurt with the raccoon incident somehow. He was laying around more than normal and moving obviously slower than the rest of the chicks. Other than that, they are all adjusting to their new home quite well. I think the hens are a little hard on them, but they are all doing ok. Most of the chicks go out the little doggy door and into the small outdoor yard during the day. The bigger hens and the banty mama and her babies all go out into the bigger pen. Her babies can fit through the holes in the fence (they are tiny), so they go out into the weeds and hunt bugs during the day while she wanders in the pen and calls them when she gets worried. She also has them roosting on the roosts with the big hens already. I'll have to get a picture, it's very cute to see these tiny little chicks on the highest roost in our chicken coop. It's just a stick we screwed up there for our other banties we had in years past, as they always slept so high. That's just where that mama goes with her tiny babies. I'm not even sure how those babies get up there, they are so small. I don't like keeping the hens locked up all day, but we are getting 8+ eggs per day this way. I guess we need to go on a nest finding hunt. They obviously have a favorite spot outside that we haven't found yet. In other news...Lance picked up 6 new piglets the other day, bringing our total pig count to 15! We've never had that many at once. However, Lance just fenced in another pig pen area so we have a lot more room for them now. Right now, the new piglets are residing in our old dog pen. The littlest one must have been a runt, he's SO small. I swear he's smaller than our Jack Russell Terrier! LOL In yet other news...Big Ben the steer went to the processor yesterday. I'm not sure how long it will take to pick up the meat, I'll have to ask Lance. The other steers are doing well and spend their days grazing in the pasture or lounging in the shade of the woods. The goats are doing well. We have Angelina in with the dogs right now and they are all good buddies at this point. Ok, not really good buddies, but they are doing ok together. She was really hard on Violet (our milk goat) and not letting her eat, so we figure Violet is getting a nice break and spending quality time with her buckling without Angelina 'butting-in' all the time, so to speak. Family news: Lilli has just half a day of school today and then half a day tomorrow and then she's off for the summer. She's very excited about summer and all the activities we have planned. Her first T-ball game was cancelled on Tuesday due to rain, so her first game will be tonight. She will play against her cousin Isaac. Isaac is Lance's cousin's son. It should be a fun game to watch, as both kids really want to win. I don't think they realize that with T-ball, everybody wins. LOL It should be fun anyway. Lauren. Well, Lauren keeps me on my toes. LOL. She is quite the little entertainer and she's so full of personality. She has her own ideas about things. When Lilli was small, we could tell her no and she wouldn't even question it. You can tell Lauren no, and she just ignores it. Pretends she didn't hear you. LOL. Ah well. Keeps me on my toes. We had the Memorial Service for Lance's dad yesterday, followed by a luncheon at his house. It was a very nice day for being outside. It was cloudy and pleasant. Not too hot, not too cold, just nice. The luncheon following was very nice as well, with a lot of visiting among family. It was just for the immediate family, so there weren't a lot of people there. Lance and Lee (his brother) fried fish from their Canada trip...300 fillets(!) and there was JUST enough leftover to send Lilli home a plate of fish for supper tonight. LOL. I think Lilli ate half of them by herself. She would sit out and eat the fish as it was pulled from the fryer. I think she at the first two batches by herself and then came in and piled herself a plate FULL to eat when everybody else ate! LOL. Then she ate another plate full later on in the evening, and then she brought a plate full home. LOL That child loves her fish. We also had hot dogs and brats/sausages on the grill. Then there were a lot of dishes brought...potatoe salad, macaroni salad, baked beans, chips and dip, etc. My mom brought her Hawiian cake and it went over really well. I think Lance brought home what was left and it was only about 3 or 4 pieces out of the whole cake. Tonight is Lilli's T-ball game. Tomorrow is Lilli's last day of school. Saturday we are heading to Indiana for the monthly animal swap meet. Lilli wants a puppy for her birthday and I think we are going to get her one, if we find one she likes. There are always a lot of dogs there, so that shouldn't be a problem. Lance and I discussed it and this is the best time to get one for her, summer is just starting, so she'll be home for 3 months and can take care of, and train her new puppy. We'll see what Saturday brings :) Saturday evening Lilli is spending the night with my parent's. Monday she has dress rehearsal for her recital. Tuesday T-ball. Wednesday is open. Thursday and Friday are rehearsal days. Friday is also out tax audit. I don't know how I'm going to finish with the audit in time to get Lilli ready and to her recital on time. I may need somebody to help me out, we'll just have to see how the audit goes. They said it usually takes 4 hours and it starts at 12:30. That puts me 30 minutes away at 4:30 and Lilli needs to be 45 minutes in the other direction from home by 6. We'll just hope our audit goes super great and we won't have to worry about any of it. Ha. After the recital and audit, we have T-ball every Tuesday and Thursday evening through June. June 16th Lauren has an appt with an ENT about her throat. She often gets white stuff on her tonsils and they don't know what it is. They are also enlarged, so I see a tonsilectomy in our somewhat near future. June 27th Lauren has her VCUG test to check her kidney reflux. Pray that it's all better now and we can go off of the antibiotics. She's been on them daily for a year now. July 8th is Lilli's 7 year 'well-child' Dr appt. It counts as her physical so she can take sports next year if she chooses. June 26th is Lilli's birthday and her last T-ball game. We plan to get her a puppy for her birthday. We also hope to take her to Michigan's Adventure. It may be the week after her birthday when we go, but we'll work it all out. Let the summer fun begin. LOL
