Selling Used Books

Boy, do I ever need some help.

We are moving to Alaska.  That's the good news.

My New York home is overrun with books.  That's the problem.

I have decided to list them on my website http://candyfoote.com/

That could take me a while!!!

Well, I have managed to put a few of them on it.

It seems to take quite a bit of time.

I have included shipping and handling in the listed prices.  Not one item is more than $5.00.

Please, please, please check it out!

If you don't see something you are interested in, then check back another day.

It will take me quite awhile to list all of these books.

I really can't take all of these books to Alaska with me.

Thanks,

Candy

The Answer to our Financial Woes

11:50, Friday, October 10, 2008 .. Posted in On My Heart .. 6 comments .. Link

The "financial" woes of our nation are on the hearts and minds of many in our nation right now.

I am not surpised in any way by the economic crisis we face. What did Americans think would happen when it has lived on a steady diet of debt and allowed our government for decades to get deeper and deeper into national debt? It does not take a rocket scientist to understand that our nation's economic crisis is due to poor financial management. We can't point a finger at our nation and it's leaders without taking a good look at our own lives. Americans are addicted to debt. YES, I say addicted.  Pretty strong words, ya think? Americans want everything and they want it right now. They want their government programs and don't realize that everything comes with a price tag. They want their new cars, new homes and fancy electronic gadgets and don't think twice about putting down plastic to pay for it.

Then there is the concern over the upcoming election. Most of my loved ones and friends are very concerned about things. They are concered about the moral and social demise of our nation.  They are concerned and rightfully so.

So now what?

I was talking the other day to a good friend. She was expressing her family's reponse to our economic woes....... there was concern in her voice...... she was worried...... her response is to stockpile food and get a gun.

Now I want to say that I think it's great to have a full pantry, anytime of year and under any enconomic state we may find ourselves in.  But, I do not believe our trust should be in what  "we are doing" or "what we can do" or what our "government" plans to do or will do. I believe , whole heartedly that our trust is to be in the Lord. The Word of God tells us that the Lord watches over the sparrow and even the lilly of the field is dressed beautifully!   When times get tough, we need to earnestly place our trust in the ONLY safe harbor of  security  --- the Lord!

" Trust in the Lord with all your heart , and lean not unto your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths."  ~~ Proverbs 3: 5 & 6

Too many Americans have forgotten this proverb.

Many have invested heavily in the stock market. My husband was a broker for a few years. He could tell stories about what goes on in the stock market.  It's really just a more polished way of gambling.  I am sorry if that offends some of you.  Many are seeing their retirement funds disintegrate before their very eyes.  In the news the past few days there have been reports of some committing suicide because of their financial woes.

What is happening here?

Friends, let us not dispair! Let us not put our trust in our stocks, our savings account, our food storage or even our guns!

May I gently encourage you to place your trust in the ONLY SAFE SECURITY we have -- and that is the Lord God!

" It is the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is His faithfulness."  ~~ Lamentations 3: 22 & 23

Great is His faithfulness! He will not fail us !!   Let us not turn to "man made" answers to our problems. Let us seek His face, humble ourselves and He has promised us that He will heal our land.

My prayer is that all of us will seek His face, seek a closer walk with Him ..... and trust, trust, trust that He will provide, protect and continue to shield us!

Why My Teens Are Homeschooled

Posted by Sharon
07:04, Friday, October 10, 2008 .. 5 comments .. Link
This is somewhat a subject I have tried to avoid, simply because some extremely personal issues occurred in our family in September of last year.   (This may be the post where you see the evil cat come out of me, God be with me while I find the correct words today)

I will do the best I can in answering this question that morningsunshine asked:

"Would you share why you took your children out of public school? I am always interested to learn other people's motivations.
You have 3 children, correct, 2 boys and one girl? or is it just one of each? "

I do have 3 children.  James is now 20, graduated from public schools.  He is the son I will not talk about much here or anywhere on the net.  Period.  He's not gay, has never been arrested, does not do drugs or drink.  He is my private child and that's all there is to it.  Please do not ask for explanations.  I will say, he is one of the biggest reasons my other 2 teens are now homeschooled, but not the only reason.

Okay, in September of last year, we had a deal with an extremely close family member (ugh).  I'll try again.

Back in 1999, my mother's live in boyfriend died.  She was left alone.  I'm the only child she has.  She called me.  At the time I was buying a house in WVa.  She wanted us to move to NC and buy a house with her.  So we left our country house and we moved to a ritzy brick subdivision in NC where the county commissioner and all the school teachers and even the music star Tony Rice (often visited by Ricky Scaggs and Dolly Parton) were my neighbors.

It was okay.  We had a hard time paying the bills.  They were split, we'd pay half, mom would pay half.

(I don't want to do this)

Well, we all lived there in the house (if you can call it living) up until 2007.  Mom found a man she liked.  That was pretty much all it took for her to decide she wanted to move in with him.  She said she'd continue helping pay on the house but she stopped paying her part.  We couldn't pay $1,000 a month mortgage, $400 a month light bill,  $200 gas bill, $100 water bill (get the idea here?).  The house was in her name.  They foreclosed.

My kids didn't want to face new kids in a new school.

They were already being teased because we didn't have enough money for designer clothes.

My daughter has a learning disability and her teachers never minded making it known to the entire class that Savannah just didn't understand today's work.

One teacher always verbally abused Curtis.  Once, to the point that he was screaming and spitting in my son's face.  This of course, drew my husband into the picture and inside the school building where he approached the teacher with a physical confrontation on the verge of explosion.

One teacher called me one day and said, "You need to get some pills for Savannah".   To which I replied, "You were educated to teach children with many levels of learning abilities, put your skills to use"!

I won't medicate my child to appease a teacher who chose this profession and then decides she can't handle the one child in her class that needs further explanation.

Savannah was suppose to receive (this was approved through the school board) extended time on class room assignments, extended time on tests, or alternative tests.  The teachers never followed through on these agreements which in turn caused my daughter to receive failing grades.

My oldest son pretty much hates people now.  Why?  The teens he went to school with were mean.   The teachers were disrespectful and hateful and rude.

I told multiple teachers multiple times, you will not gain any respect from my children by disrespecting them.

My middle son watched other teen boys at the end of the hall, hiding behind their locker door, doing drugs.

In 8th grade there were several girls already pregnant.  Why?  Most of them were pregnant because they wanted to be the most popular girl in school.  What better way of getting your name out in a public school than by answering the call of young boys who love to gather up in the locker room and share notes?

So, you can see that throughout the years, home schooling sat in the back of our mind.  It was discussed often.  It just happened to be that when we were moving here, it was more convenient for all of us to make the change at that point.

Why do I home school?

So my children will no longer be abused by teachers or principals or their own peers.   So my daughter won't enter the popularity contest.  So my son can avoid drugs.   So I don't have to worry daily about their safety and their sanity.

I wish for us all to join together to pray for our country.  Each day I will have a new prayer from the website in the previous post.  Go there to see on join me here - whatever you do, please pray for God's will.

My posts keep getting blocked and messed up but I am trying to stay diligent and so here goes...

****************************************

For Members of the Media to Remain Open, Forthcoming and Truthful

Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body.
--Ephesians 4:25

Loving Lord, You are the God of all Truth, and there is nothing impure or false in You.  You bring all things to light, and nothing is hidden from Your sight.  Before You all things are laid bare and every detail, whether large or small is known.  All praise and glory to You, O Mighty God!

I ask You to move and work among the members of the media this day, O Lord, keeping them from any form of falsehood.  Let them lift up only what is true in these campaigns, Lord, that as a nation we may be discerning as we consider those whom we will elect to the offices of our government.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.

In Response to the Home School Discussion

This is the comment I left for Sarah

If Curtis (http://www.homesteadblogger.com/MtAiryMom/108463/)

or Savannah (http://www.homesteadblogger.com/MtAiryMom/108407/)

had written that final statement you wrote, this is what I would have taught them.

Proper Grammar:

"So yeah." (This is not a complete sentence.)

"Thoughts, anyone?" (This is not a complete sentence)

I know most people here probably lean toward homeschooling; are there any proponents for public school out there? (This sentence contradicts itself.  Are we "here" or "out there"?)

I am eager to here both sides, as I am currently extremely disillusioned with both.

("Here" is spelled incorrectly.  The use of the word "as" in your sentence is incorrect.  As does not mean because.  The correct word in that situation would have been "because".  I am eager to "hear" both sides "because" I am currently, extremely disillusioned with both.)

Now, those corrections were not to tease you about your writing skills.  They were not meant to demean you in any way.  I was making a point.

Would a high school teacher have truly taken the time to pick out those errors in your final statement at the end and give you a full explanation of the errors you made as well as instructions for making corrections?  Most likely not.  The typical method of the teacher is to read and grade only.  With a classroom of 20 to 25 students, the teacher does not have the amount of time it takes to show direct corrections to individual errors such as these.  The essay would have received a grade based on these errors without explanation.

This is why we home school (well, at least one reason).  Our children do not receive the individual attention they deserve in public school.

When blogging, I use caps in many areas where they are not necessary, I use incorrect grammar, etc.

But, if you are calling out home schooling parents, be on the lookout for the one parent who will grade your essay because it is instinctual behavior of a home school parent to be constantly teaching our children.

Anyone here will tell you, I never approach a blogger with anything but kindness so please do take this as a kind plea to accept each of us as we are without questioning us or the nature of our children.  Please do not ask us to explain ourselves with implications that our children are not socialized.  In turn we will not ask you to explain yourself or anything you may have been exposed to while attending public schools.  It's all about respectful acceptance.

I'll add this to my blog simply for comment purposes.  I'd rather not have comments pertaining to this ending up on my entries about my father.

Thankful to BOTH of my Fathers (Part 2)

On Tuesday I left off talking about my daddy's visit on Sunday.  I shared pictures of the Saladmaster Pots and Pans and also pictures of some Vintage Kitchen Utensils he had gotten for me.   Then, yesterday I also shared how I will process the Pumpkin he gave me.

Daddy doesn't get to come into town very often so normally when he does he brings a good amount of things with him because during his time away he has visited many yard sales, estate sales and elderly ladies' basements.  He just gathers up things and then starts handing them out to the people who seem to have the most need or greatest interest.

The things he sells are for the most part, the old Hoosier flour bin cabinets (normally 2 or 3 times a year he sells one of those), he also sells the old Buffets that a lot of people call Sideboards and then once in a while, he will run across a nice Pie Safe and sell it off.  The other things he sells are not quite as coveted by home decorators but valuable and useful for storage in the home such as Painted Dish Cabinets, Shaving Stands, Curios, etc.

Anyway, Daddy's almost guaranteed to enter an elderly ladies' basement to remove a piece of furniture only to find a few (if not several) boxes of items she has left stored for years and no longer needs.  So, he will normally make an offer on those and take them home and go through them.

When he came down Sunday and gave me the gifts I've already written about and shared pictures of - he also gave me these things to add to Grandma's Handkerchiefs.

The first thing I opened was this
Vintage Gift Box
Inside were these:

Vintage Handkerchiefs with Gift Box
Then I opened this little Vintage Christmas Card Box

Vintage Christmas Card BoxIt is larger than it appears.

Because inside were these:

Handkerchiefs, cards, brooches

The lady who owned all of these things was named Doris, which explains the "D" on some of the handkerchiefs.

Then he also had given me a large ziploc plastic bag and these were inside:

A few of my favorites are these:

So, now I've covered the quantity of handkerchiefs I've received from my
dear sweet Daddy:

I will still need to blog a few more times, because I haven't covered everything yet.  As you can see on my calendar I am expecting company today so I'm not sure if I'll blog again today or Monday.

This is a test, this is only a test.  If this had been an actual entry, you would have found something of value to read here.

Please tune in at a later date for quality writing and meaningful thoughts.

Ponder if you will, the value of an entry that makes you examine your innermost feelings and emotions.

Excuse me, this is only a test.  Pondering here, is not allowed :)

I would appreciate a comment to assist me in analyzing the appearance of the layout :)

PS.  Don't worry, I'm not getting rid of my porch swing :)  This is for someone else, a work in progress :) You will still find my Porch Swing Here

Thank You Jesus For Everything!

I greeted this day with love in my heart; I praised my enemies; I thought

“I love you” silently to all I met and I loved my self enough to protect my body from overindulgence and my mind from evil and despair.

What a great way to greet this day as I release all not of God from me and replace it with His love which forgives. This process is very lifting.

Praises to thee Father for your direction is of righteousness.

^j^ ^j^ ^j^ ^j^ ^j^

The conditions of conquest are not always easy. We have but to toil awhile, endure awhile, believe always and never turn back. Simms

Have a uplifting day as you also learn to love self and another beyond their flaws.

Blessings, rilda
