Praying for the Sun to Make an Appearance Today!!!

Happy Birthday America!!!!  Let's all cheer for the Red, White and Blue!!!  I love the Fourth of July, and the cookouts, family gatherings, and fireworks.  But this year, we aren't sure if there is going to be much fireworks.  We might be able to still arrange the cookout, and just eat indoors.  But is is difficult to celebrate with fireworks when it is raining!!  UGH!  The weather reports aren't sure if the rain will stop before sunset and the big firework displays or not.  DARN IT!

Matthew took off earlier this morning with our Noah, 3 years old, to pick out some fireworks.  We always wait until the 4th to buy ours because of the wonderful sales they hold the day of.  He alsos picked up some sausage and milk on the way home for our breakfast....sausage gravy and biscuits!!  YUMMY!  He even made breakfast for us.  Matthew never cooked (except for Hamburger Helper) until he met me.  LOL  Now he is the breakfast expert and won't let me in the kitchen when he is making pancakes or his specialty of biscuits and gravy.

The rest of the day we are going to hang out, relax (finish putting away laundry, do a few dishes) and just enjoy having daddy home!   Tonight we are going to my brother's house for a cookout (possibly cook in...depending on the whether), and then back to town for the city wide fireworks display.  I am looking forward to seeing my family today.  We are all so busy, and it seems working schedules conflict that we don't get together more often.  Looking forward to seeing how big my neice Megan is getting with her first pregnancy.  She is due in October, and I am sure she isn't much bigger than her little frame was before, but maybe a tiny bit.

Matthew's family is all scattered this weekend.  We made a comment last night that if everyone wasn't gone, we would have loved to get them all together at our house this weekend.  Oh well.  His parents church is having a 3 day meeting, his sister lives in Washington,DC area and unable to come home, and his other sister, her hubby and 5 year old daughter just started their 5 day trek back to Missouri from California and today.  They visited Sea World, Disney, etc. and had lots of fun.  I can't wait to hear about their trip!

That's all for now, Blessings,Mj

Thinking about the Fall Garden

Posted by HSB Front Porch

I know, Summer just started, and I'm talking about Fall already!

But, in order to have a Fall garden, some things should be done now- planning, ordering seed, planting seeds to transplant into the garden when it is time, adding compost or any other needed soil builders, etc.

In my area, July 1 was the suggested date for planting tomato, pepper, and eggplant seed.  I'm a few days behind schedule, mainly because I'm trying to keep up with harvesting the tomatoes that are ripening like crazy right now!

Most of the Fall planting for my area comes a little later, since July and  August are always HOT.   The bulk of  planting comes from September to November.  But, if I don't at least make a plan now and make sure I have seeds ready, I may miss my planting date when it arrives.

Many of the same vegetables that grow in the Spring garden can be replanted for Fall, they like the cool weather and will do well if they have time to mature before a frost gets them.  You can probably get a list of what grows well in your area in the Fall either online, from a local nursery, or from your County Extension Agent.

Here's a little chart to show when the first predicted Fall frost date is:

Zone 3 - Sept 1st - 30th
Zone 4 - Sept 1st - 30th
Zone 5 - Sept 30th - Oct 30th
Zone 6 - Sept 30th - Oct 30th
Zone 7 - Oct 15th - Nov 15th
Zone 8 - Oct 30th - Nov 30th
Zone 9 - Nov 30th - Dec 30th
Zone 10 - Nov 30th - Dec 30th
Zone 11 - Frost Free

If you aren't sure what zone you live in, here's a map that will show you.

With that information you can see how long it takes a particular crop to mature and then count backwards to get an estimated planting date.  Of course, it all depends on the weather, and it is good to give your plants at least a week or two of a head-start if your area often has early frosts.  I live in Zone 8, and sometimes we don't even have a frost until close to Thanksgiving.  Fall is a great time for growing here.

Please share what you grow in your Fall garden and any tips you have.  Those of you who live in colder climates, please share your wisdom, as this Texas gardener has never had to garden where it really gets cold !

Hope you have a great holiday weekend, and maybe next week, spend some time planning (and perhaps planting) for the Fall garden!

Blessings,

Catherine

Preparing for Holiday Bible Club

Posted by Jo

This has been quite a week!  For one thing, we've been in heatwave mode all week, and it's horribly humid.  I've discovered that my productivity in the afternoons at work is atrocious when I'm this hot and can hardly think.  For another, our Holiday Bible Club starts two weeks on Monday, and I'm terribly worried that I'll never get all the preparation done I need to.

Everything else has pretty much gone to pot in the meantime.  Haven't cleaned anything except dishes all week - I really will have to tomorrow, though, as we're having about 20 people round for a barbecue lunch, and the bathroom's full of blue fluff.

This week I've:
  • Designed a template for an angel decoration craft
  • Designed the template for a ridiculously complicated stained-glass craft
  • Made a giant cardboard sword, helmet and shield for Goliath
  • Stuck together masses of paper to draw Goliath on
  • Designed a David and Saul's armour paper doll craft
  • Started working on a lion mask - need to check the size of it on a child
  • Bought 18 pairs of socks to make into sock puppets
  • Bought balloons and plastic cups to use for the Goliath activity
  • Cut out 36 snake tongues from pink felt
  • Laminated two sets of Bible dominos
So I think not having had time to wash the kitchen floor is fairly excusable, really.  I've still had to cook and go to Bible study, as well as all that extra stuff.  I'll be quite glad when I've got all this preparation done and finished!

Tonight, after Youth Group I need to start preparing barbecue food, and see if I can actually fit anything else in the fridge - at the moment it's completely stuffed.  The problem is exacerbated by the two tubs of green walnuts I've got soaking in brine in there, for pickled in about a week's time.  I hope they're worth all this fuss.

Still, I've made sufficient headway on my holiday club to-do list, I think, that I actually stand a reasonable chance of getting some sleep and fewer emotional melt-downs next week, which would be lovely for me, and probably rather a relief for my husband, too.

(Notes to any Americans reading: Holiday Bible Club is what you call Vacation Bible School.  The fact that our barbecue is on July 4th is purely coincidental, as we are obviously not celebrating another nation's independence from us, because that would make no sense at all.)

Good morning from another rainy day in Maine the start of July isn't so good.. Just about he whole month of June it rained. Farmers are having a hard time with crops . The fields are filled with water tractors can't get on its a mess. We have such a short growing season too begin with. The hay crop some don't even have first crop in yet do to rain.

Here at the farm My garden not doing so good have replanted cucumbers again. Also have pumpkins -squash-cukes started over in the greenhouse.. I have to grow them enough so the rain and beetles do destroy them.

Ray has put new fencing up for the goats Mike and Blarney are doing just fine. Mike just got banded a few days ago he is doing fine. And Blarney lost his band a few days ago and he is doing great.

Ive been keeping myself busy trying to mow and garden and yard work between rain .. I've also doing some craft work.

Today I have a busy day we are having my brother and family and maybe my parents over for a bbq tomorrow. I have baking and cleaning  to do. I have my first load of laundry in the washer and the dishwasher is humming away.

I would like to wish every one a Happy 4th and drive safely if your on the road and enjoy the week with family and friends all that fellowship is good..

The Garden at the Beginning of July

While I've been slacking in my blogging over the past few weeks, the garden has been growing like crazy.  I thought it was probably time for an update on how things are doing.

In the Main Bed:

Our main vegetable bed.  There are strawberries here permanently, and we've planted beans, squashes and courgettes there as well.

The strawberries are essentially finished now.  I made a vast quantity of jam a couple of weeks ago (thankfully before this heatwave kicked in), and we managed to find enough to eat for supper once last week, but basically they're over.  They were beautiful while they lasted, though.

The courgettes and squashes are producing flowers now.  So far I've only seen male flowers on the courgettes, but I'm not too worried as apparently that's normal.  We have three courgette plants this year - I planted 6 seeds, four of them germinated and were planted out, but one appears to have withered - it's just a stalk with one leaf on it and doesn't seem to be doing anything.  Three courgette plants in more than enough, though, so I'm not worried.  The squash plants have really taken off.  They're growing in all directions, and I have to keep checking that they're not twisting tendrils round the bean plants, because I think that would suffocate the beans.  There are lots of flowers now, both male and female, and I hand pollinated a couple of the female flowers to make sure the seeds produced are true to type.  Those flowers have nearly died away now, probably hastened by their rubber bands.  I've marks the squashes with wool round the stem.

I noticed earlier in the week that we actually have little tiny beans.  I'm not sure how easy this picture is to see, but there are a couple of beans in it:

Two tiny beans

However, last night I was out watering and noticed that some of the beans are rather bigger:

A bean that's big enough to eat!

I suspect we may be able to start eating them next week, which is very exciting!

Vegetables in Pots

I've also got a few things growing in pots, owing to lack of space in the bed more than anything else.  I've got four large-ish pots of leaf beet (chard - perpetual spinach) growing, and they seem to be doing ok.  They actually seem to grow better if I cut some of the leaves of and eat them.

I've also got peppers and chillis growing in pots.  The pepper is actually in our bedroom, on the windowsill, chiefly because I need to keep the pepper and chilli separated so I can save the seeds.  It's got a flower or two on it now, which is exciting.  The chills (2 plants, in the mini greenhouse) also have flowers:

The tomatoes are starting to produce fruit, too.  We've got three plants in a "hanging basket" bolted to the fence a few feet up, and they're growing very well.  Lots of trusses of flowers, though only three tomatoes have appeared yet.  It's a Siberian variety, a yellow cherry tomato, which I'm hoping will make ripening more likely.  So many of our friends grew tomatoes last year that simply never ripened.

The "basket" with three tomato plants in it.

Tomato fruit growing and (hopefully) ripening

The Herb Garden

At the other end of the garden, on our patio, most of my herbs sit in pots.  We have chives, marjoram, lemon thyme, golden thyme and ordinary thyme in a herb pot, parsley in a pot and a third pot containing mint.

Mint, growing like mad and thinking about taking over

Parsley

This is one of my (ordinary) thyme plants.  I'm really impressed by this, as I grew it from a cutting taken from my mother's garden in May.  There are three of them, and they seem to be doing really well.

We also have a basil plant.  This is amazing - it was meant to go outside (according to the label on the plant when it was bought), but it promptly withered and appeared to have died.  There were maybe two leaves left, both brown, and we thought it had had it.  We're not sure why - lack of water / too much water / not enough sunlight / too cold are all possibilities.  Anyway, we shoved it in the greenhouse, and a few weeks later it looks like this:

Kristi was board earlier today and decided to play wii.  She played monopoly with Hope!  Hope is our soon to be 10 year old golden medical alert service dog.  We train the dog to all kinds of stuff some funny and silly but this is too much!

Titus is doing great in his service dog training.  We took him out for the first time to go shopping and he was wonderful.  If we stopped and looked or spoke to someone he would lay down with out being told to.  I thought it was odd, so I kept testing him.  I would walk and stop not look at him he would just lay down .  That is amazing for a six month old puppy to do on his first outing in stores.  I wonder if Kristi is going to teach Titus to play monopoly??

We start training them as soon as they are born.  Also having good parents helps too.  It took me two years to find his parents, to find the lines I was looking for.  Now we need one more female golden.  We might get one from Alex's breeder.

Blessings, Mj

And did not know what a pine cone was!!!   Poor Kristi she thought there was more than one of her!!  Look at the locals nails on that local, see how long they are?? They could hurt the girls!!

Sorry but I had to write and show the pictures , they are so cute.  I will show more latter.
