feeling helpless

so my almost thirteen year old son has mono and I feel so helpless. He is usually an independent guy, doesn't cry easily, is just a wonderful kid.  Last night I was on my way home from a meeting and he called me in tears, and couldn't tell me why he was crying, he just said he needed me.

I got home and he sobbed in my arms.  everything hurts, he is beyond tired and exhausted from fighting it.  I carefully explained to him that mono is something you cannot control, and there is not much we can do beyond pain relief.  He calmed down a little and I fed him an ice pop which soothed his throat, gave him a glass of water and tucked him into my bed for  a few hours.  Once he started feeling better I moved him to his bed, stripped my bed ( which I was going to do anyway) and went to bed myself.

My 22 yo son who lives on his own, showed up last week to tell me that he wasnt feeling well and wanted me to make him soup. I asked him if he wanted home made or can, he said can. I laughed knowing that he could have done that at his apartment. But I knew what he wanted and needed was his mom, lol.
I dont think they ever stop needing "mommy love" no matter how big or old they get. Which I think, is a good thing.
