• Jan. 30, 2006 - Heirloom Country Gardens
| Heirloom Country Gardens; Timeless Treasures for Today's Gardeners
by Sarah Wolfgang Heffner is another book I discovered (not sure where
I heard about it) that is a treasure for my personal library.
This books gives a history about heirloom gardens and shows some garden
designs. It covers heirloom vegetabls, antique flowers, herbs and
flavorful old-time fruits and berries. It shows you how to grow
gardens grandma's way, has projects for a country look, talks about how
to save seeds and even includes some favorite old-time recipes.
At the back you can find resources for heirloom gardens, recommended
reading and a USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map. Scattered throught
the book are beautiful pictures of gardens and vegetables. Another
winner for my bookshelf!

• Jan. 30, 2006 - Growing 101 Herbs That Heal
I can't remember who recommended the book Growing 101 Herbs That Heal
by Tammi Hartung, but I wish to thank them. It is another
excellent book that I plant to add to my library. I was trying to
think of a way to to describe all the good things covered in this book,
when I decided to put it in the words of the auther under "A Guide to
Using this Book." "This book has been arranged to make
it easy and fun to read. You will find information that speaks of
my own experiences and thos of others. The step-by-step adventrue
begins with planning and designing your garden (chapter 2). An
in-depth look at maintaining healthy soils (chapter ) follows.
The you'll discover how to propogate different herbs (chapter 4), and
to incorporate them into your garden. Of course, no gardening
book would be complete without instructions for maintaining a healthy
garden, so you'll find that information in chapter 5. Be sure to
read chapter 6 carefully for gereral insight into organic insect and
disease management. I want to inspire you to harvest and use
your plants, so I've provided a detailed harvesting guide in chapter 7
as well as easy-to-follow directions for the kitchen "pharmacy"
(chapter 8), where you will prepare your own medicinal remedies.
Since I am a firm believer in promoting good health through our foods,
I've added chapter 9, which includes delectable recipes for cooking
with medicinal herbs. I would like you to have the opportunity
to get to know 101 different medicinal herbs, so I have profiled each
one of them in chapter 10, A Gardener's Materia Medica.
Come back to this section whenever you want to understand or experiment
with a specific herb and need to know a lot about it individually.
If you need some guidance on where to buy seeds or a gardening item, or
if you need further information on a particular subject, simply turn to
the abck of the book. This is where you'll find information on
resources such as gardening supply companies and professional
organizations. There is also a reading list that conatinas my
favorite plant books so thtat you can expore individual subjects
further." This book is set up in a easy to read format and
includes a lot of nice pictures, She also includes several tables
that give "Plant Characteristics and Requirements", "Plant Habitat
Preferences", "Planning a Theme Garden" and "Propogation at a
Glance". I was able to get this book through my public library
and now plan on purchasing it for my private library.

• Jan. 18, 2006 - "Get the Sugar Out"
Do you or your loved ones suffer from the following: Cardiovascular Disease Cancer Adult-Onset Diabetes (type II) Hypoglycemia Impaired Immunity
According to the book, "Get the Sugar Out: 501 Simple Ways to Cut
The Sugar Out of any Diet" by Ann Louise Gittleman, M.S., C.N.S (I saw
it listed on Christine Miller's blog so
I checked it out of my library.) "Although the media have presented
dietary fat as the villian in the development of these diseases, sugar
appears to be the real culprit" Ms. Gittleman goes on to
tell what sugar does to the body, and how can you eliminate it from
your diet by using natural sugar substitutes, alternative recipes,
replacement measurements. A must read if you are looking for
better health. Available at Amazon

• Jan. 16, 2006 - The Encyclopedia of Country Living
I have seen this book mentioned several times on other blogs so figured
I would checked it out from the library. We already owned the
Reader's Digest's "Back to the Basics" and thought it covered pretty
much everything, but I was wrong. "The Encyclopedia of Country
Living" is AWESOME. She has about every topic I could think of,
plus hundreds more. This book is chock full of information,
recipes, resources..you name it! I am going to wait until the
10th edition comes out because she has more to add about
strawberries!!!! But this book is a must have for any beginning
and serious homesteader! and of course AMAZON carries it!
Just a note "Back to the Basics" is different and still a good resource
to have on hand. In my opinion, BTB is great for my husband and
TEOCL is perfect for me!

• Jan. 10, 2006 - Another Book Review
I just finished reading the book "What the Bible Says About Healthy
Living" by Rex Russell, MD. and it is excellent. Dr.
Russell has three principles that we should use when deciding what to
eat. They are: Principle I: Eat only substances God created for food. Avoid what is not designed for food.
Principle II: As much as possible, eat foods as they were
created--before they are changed or converted into something humans
think might be better. Principle III: Avoid food addictions. Don't let any food or drink become your god..
He then goes on to talk about fats, meat, sweetners, spices, fruits
& vegetable, & beverages. He gives biblical and scientific
backup for his conclusions as well as some personal experiences.
It is a very enjoyable and informative book. A must for those who
are interested in health and nutrition. You can purchase it
through Amazon.
I am not affiliated with either Amazon or Dr. Russell.
Enjoy! Now to get onto reading some of my other books while
awaiting the arrival of my seed catalogs. :)

especially for the beginning homeschooler. It contains a lot of
things that it has taken me three years to learn and has somethings I
have just learned through reading the book
While very informative, it is broken down into easy bites so you can
read a little at a time. I wish I had this information when I
first started homeschooling. So check it out (by clicking on the
