• Mar. 16, 2006 - Cool Finds for miniature gardens!

If you are like me and live on only 1/10 of an acre and half of that is taken up by house and garage, you dont have much room for a garden (especially when the little yard you have is shared with children, a German Shepherd and pretty soon...chickens!).  One of the ways I compensate for having to have a small garden is by using the Square Foot Garden!

Another way I try to make up for having a small yard is to purchase miniature plants. As I was thumbing through my Gurney's and Henry Field's catalogs (I think they are owned by similar companies if you compare their catalogs), and getting my seed order ready,  I found some neat items that will help fit in my yard.

Dwarf Blueberry bush.....grows in a pot, but is supposed to yield a lot of berries.

Pole Apple Tree.....doesnt have any big branches but the leaves and apples grow from the trunk.  This was from an unexpected mutant tree!

They also have a various fruit trees called Lil'Big that dont grow more than 6 feet tall, so you dont need a ladder to prune, spray or pick! and you can fit a few in a small yard!

They also have fruit trees where you can grow three -five varieties of apples, cherries or pears on one tree (they would have to be all apples, all cherries or all pears, but three different kinds)

Pretty cool, huh?

I'm with you, Kay :) . I just "had" to have a Bush Celebrity tomato last night at Lowe's ;) . I'm sure to look like a nut moving it from sunny spot to sunny spot 10 times a day! I'd really like to try some of those mini blueberries, too.

LOVE SQ FT Gardening! It's my fave way to garden! I can't do one this year though, because the only spot that gets enough sunlight is covered with 150 apple trees. Not for long though...not for long.

Thanks for sharing this great way to garden!
