Urban Pioneer
• Jan. 1, 2006 - Memories that came with Changing my Title
I thought I was being original with my Urban Homestead (Wannabe)...then
I realized there was already an Urban Homestead out there and a
Wannabe...so here is my new title "Urban Pioneer". My husband
said I would make a great pioneer woman.
Thinking about a title made me realize that I guess in some ways I have
lived as a "pioneer woman in the city". The house we live in was
a "fixer upper" to say the least. When we first moved in, I had
no running water except what I had to get from the spout in the
backyard. It was like going camping. Thankfully I had experience
with that. Ever make your in laws pancakes on a gas grill?
(we had only been married a year and our firstborn was 3 weeks old).
The plumbing, electrical, plaster wall, windows, and heating all
had to be replaced. I remember the second winter we spent here,
we were heating with a woodstove & kerosene (not together :).
We had used electric the first year, but it was expensive). I was
7 months pregnant with our 2nd child. We had run out of chopped
firewood, so I went out to chop some. I also needed some
kindling, so I grabbed what I thought was some scrap wood out of my
husbands garage. I was pretty mad because I was the one having to
chop wood. Turns out the "kindling" I grabbed was my husbands
good tongue in groove maple (thankfully I didnt burn all of it).
He always made sure I had a good supply of wood and kindling after
that. We laugh at it now! I have also had some canning
experience. My mother taught me to make jams & jellies when I
was growing up. She had majored in Home Economics and made sure
her daughters learned the basics such as sewing, crocheting &
embroidering, cooking, baking (including bread), housekeeping (still
struggle with that one, I am a Flybaby) and gardening. Well that is enough for memory land and my "resume" Hehe! Have a great day!
