• Mar. 8, 2006 - Grass Fed Beef

The more I have been reading about the meat industry (note "Fast Food Nation" by Eric Schlosser" and eating organic, the more I have been "chomping at the bit" to find a local rancher near me that sells meat by the quarter or half, since that is the most efficient way to buy it.  I just can't seem to find someone who is close.  I have searched "Eat Wild", "Local Harvest" and similar websites, but the closest place is over an hour away.  Now I understand that is pretty close for most people, but then there is the process of calling (I strongly dislike calling strangers), finding out information and prices, setting up appoinments around my hubbys work schedule, making sure we have the money to buy, etc, etc, etc.  *sigh*.  I just needed to vent here. If anyone knows where I can get Pasture Fed Beef here in southeastern, PA.  Let me know!  Thanks

I know how you feel about calling people; I'm the same way. But if folks want your business they will be happy to make it as easy as possible. Is there a meat processor near you? They might be able to tell you of a local farmer. Good luck in your quest!

I just got some grass fed beef. My sister in law works for her fathers farm. Sorry, it's in WA state though. I hope you find something close by you! I just posted my Mayo recipe for you! Hope you enjoy it!

I thought cows loved corn. Even my daughters baby board books talk about eating sweet yellow corn...
I never realized grass fed was so important. I live on a farm. It is not mine we rent a space for our trailer there - bought it off of the farmer as it was his and asked to leave it there for now...

He has cows in our barn. They start out as babies - we have about 25 calfs in there right now. They moo at us and we laugh. We go down and see them. But he told us they are in the barn because he only lets his other cows out to graze. These cows are corn fed for butchering. Here I thought corn fed was the Good stuff that they liked. I do know they go out but very rarely. I have seen three life cycles of the cows now from calf to butcher. But I write this to say he is a local farmer. They have a huge farm but these are just in a small red old barn by my house. And they are not the grass fed grazers you think. So just going local does not mean you are getting grass fed. So be sure to ask - although I highly doubt you would not ask! You know a lot more than I do :) I am just trained to the ways of society and the farmer told me corn fed was better for butchering them so I just assumed it was the best for them.... duh moment.
