• Jul. 9, 2007 - Revenge of the Japanese Beetles

We have what appears to be a grapevine that sprouted up on our fence this year.   I remember that we had a grapevine in our garden when I was growing up and my mother would pay me  $.01 per Japanese beetle that I would pull off and cloroform (put them in a jar with a cotton ball that had nail polish remover on it).   So I was not surprised to see Japanese beetles on this grapevine.   Not being so generous with my children and not wanting to use toxic nail polish remover on them, I have been picking them off and throwing them into a bucket of water (and they have been following my example)....I would then dump the water into a dishpan in the chicken coop and the chickens would eat gobble the beetles out of the water (I didnt have to worry about them flying away when they were in the water).

It seems like the more japanese beetles I pull of the vine and the surrounding rose of sharon bushes, the more japanese beetles there are.  It started with a dozen, then two dozen and today I must have pulled at least 3-4 dozen of the bushes.   The upper grape leaves look like lace.   Is it because of the mix of heat and rain that they are rampant this year?   They are sure getting there revenge, but thankfully it is on a grapevine that is not bearing fruit this year instead of my cucumber/green bean leaves.

Does anyone know of a way to get rid of these pests naturally besides just picking them off the vines?  Would spraying soapy water on the leaves help?  Just wondering if there are any other natural or organic solutions.

I heard on a radio garden show that a japanese beetle trap helps. It some kind of trap that the mature beetles go into. Then you can put them in your chicken pen.

I don't think traps are a good idea, as they have something on them that attracts the beetles. That means more beetles will find your place. We had thousands, literally clouds of japanese beetles. We never totally get rid of them, but keep them in check by letting the chickens run around (under supervision) for a couple of hours each day. While we weed or do outside chores, the chickens have a field day eating those beetles!
