• Jan. 1, 2006 - Planning out the New Year

I am really looking forward to reading others blogs and learning more about homesteading.  My husband, four children and I are currently living in a "borough" in Pennsylvania.  A borough is like a small city.  Our dream is to someday own some acres and homestead in Kentucky where my family is.  This dream may be realized sooner than I expect, but we are waiting on God to see.  In the meantime I would like to get some practice on the land that we have.  All .18 of an acre.
I have been working on building a compost pile this year as well as a few tomatoes.  One thing I have learned is when it comes to tomatoes I am better off buying them already started.  One of my favorite gardening books is "The Square Foot Garden".  This is perfect for me in many ways because I dont have much room for a garden and this shows me how to get the best yield for the space I do have. I also hate weeding and this minimizes the amount I need to do and I space out the squares if I have to.  I want one of the squares to be herbs.  I also want to plant a few berry bushes.  I have already ordered my seed catalogs!

I would also like to smuggle some chickens...about 3 or 4 (is it Ok to have that few chickens).  Technically we are not suppose to have chickens, but one block from me is definitely a rooster, if they can get away with that, what about a few quieter pullets (am I showing ignorance here?).  That is pretty much the extent of the amount of homesteading I can do for now where I am, unless I do bees and rabbits.

Well that is enough ramblin for today...any advice?

When I lived in city limits (in 2nd largest city in IN) I kept three hens. My neighbors all knew I had them and I check local ordinances as well. Most large cities allow female poultry. Check your with your local animal control agency for info. Good luck!
