• Feb. 27, 2006 - Chicken Feathers & Cranberry Sauce

Hello!

We just finished our delicious chicken dinner.  Since we are talking about getting some chickens, my girls mentioned that we sure are going to have a lot of chicken feathers around (when we butcher the chickens).  So that made me think,  for those of your who have chickens, what do you do with your chicken feathers?

Also, I usually buy canned cranberry jelly (I like both the lumpy and the smooth kind, but the rest of the family prefers smooth).  Does anybody have a great recipe for cranberry jelly (that tastes close or better than the can)?

Thanks a lot!

Good for you on the March Menu! WOW! You go girl!

On the chickens...we have our chickens processed by an amish place for $1.25 per bird...so we don't have any feathers around our place. If the price goes up at all, we'll probably be doing them ourselves, and I'm honestly not sure what we'll do with the feathers..it's a great question!

On the cranberry sauce...if you buy a bag of fresh cranberries, there is a recipe on the bag. I followed that last Thanksgiving and it was really good. It was lumpy though...I would imagine you could strain it for the smooth variety. (?)

Have a great day!

I don't kill my chickens so I can't tell you about the feathers, except that most people use them to make feather pillows. My grandmothers made the softest pillows I've ever slept on. They didn't use the outside feathers, but the smaller and softer down ones underneath, I think. They used the blue and white pillow ticking material for the case.

I haven't a clue. Guess that wasn't much help was it! ^..^

Cranberry sauce, I have tried to get my silly children to eat the good stuff, homemade and fresh and all that jazz. But they insist that if it is not shaped like a can with rings around it, it is not "real " cranberry sauce.

I kept a lot of chicken feathers, intending to do 'something' with them someday. They're still waiting. I've seen yarn spun with feathers and I think they'd make great embellishments for jewelry and baskets. I remember when people used the little feathers to stuff pillows.
