• Feb. 27, 2006 - What do you put in your Salad?

Just curious what everyone puts in their salads.  If you blog your answer be sure to let me know.

I will start...It can be any of the combinations of :

iceburg lettuce
romaine lettuce
spinach
tomatoes
cucumbers
carrots
celery
green, red or yellow peppers

I know pretty boring!

if I am feeling really healthy (or just think of it) I will add sunflower seeds and sesame seeds!

What does your salads look like?

• Feb. 27, 2006 - What don't I put in a salad...

Posted by Katiecakes
is a better question. I put tons of stuff in salads depending on what's available. Here's a general list of things I've put in salads, not necessarily all at the same time:

Lettuce varieties (I grow several varieties)
Dandelion leaves
Wild greens I find
Beet greens
Leftover cooked beans
Leftover cooked grains (rice, barley, etc.)
Cucumbers
Peppers
Onions
Carrots
Beets (raw and/or pickled)
Hard boiled eggs
Leftover cooked meats
Croutons (made from stale bread)
Orange sections
Raisins
Toasted or Raw Nuts
Toasted or Raw Seeds
Coconut (not the presweetened kind)

The list could go on and on...

Well.....
mostly a mixture of whichever of the following I have on hand: Spinach, leaf lettuce, romaine, red and green cabbage, carrotts, mushrooms, bell peppers, tomatoes, zuchinni, green onions, radishes, black olives....
Oh, can't leave out boiled eggs and shredded cheese, too! I love salads.

Mine looks about like yours, except I usually skip the iceberg. I really like raisins or sunflower seeds, a hint of cheese is nice but not great for me on my diet. If I'm feeling adventurous I'll put grilled chicken in. Love little tomatoes instead of sliced big ones.

I've never liked any salad I've made, but like the ones in resturants! Carla has a spinach and strawberry salad posted on her site that sounds so good I'll have to try it!

I like to make greek salad. It's our favorite.
tomatoes, cucumbers, finely chopped onion, green peppers, black olives, feta cheese.... 1tbsp red wine vinegar, 2 tbsp olive oil, oregano, garlic, salt and pepper make the dressing.

Also a strawberry spinach salad with sliced almonds and a poppy seed dressing... ask me if you want the dressing recipe cuz I forget it off the top of my head.....but it's MMMMMMM...yummy.

Spinach leaves, (fresh, raw and rinsed) (I used a bag of organic spinach leaves, ready to use)
Strawberries (rinsed and cut up)
Almond slivers

Dressing: (i didn't measure this part either! haha)
1 cup mayo
1/2 cup sugar (I used a bit less)
1/4 cup vinegar (I used a bit less)
Milk (to thin) (I didn't measure but about 1/4-1/2 cup I'm guessing)
2 tbsp poppy seeds
Mix together

• Feb. 27, 2006 - Anything can go in a salad

Posted by mamabeart003
I don't think there is anything really that I haven't tried in a salad. I try to have at least one a day for myself. The rest of my family is slowly coming along to enjoying salads. Though our two youngest love them, especially the baby now that all his teeth are through he can enjoy much more of them.

Honestly, is there something you shouldn't put in a salad? I love your site and your children are beautiful. :)

I put a lot of the same things you do, but I didn't see avacados, parmesan cheese and another thing that's different but good is chow mein noodles. They give it a good crunch and a little different taste.

I found you from the Making it Home Yahoo group. I look forward to reading more of your blogs. You can visit mine at www.lora.masterskey.org
